Bouquet, Dress, & Veil!

Hi! I am getting married in July on the beach in the OBX. So excited!  I need your opinion on a couple of things.

What kind of bouquet should I use?  My favorite flower is a calla lily.  I had originally thought I would just do a bouquet of white calla lilies, but I am wondering if something with color would look better.  My bridesmaids are all wearing color.  My dress is the Sottero & Midgley Suzette (all lace, crystal beading)... It's ivory & had a gold underlay.  Should I go with a flower in more of a coral color?  Or, should I do another color? Or, should I go a completely different direction & use maybe a brooch bouquet?! SO many decisions!

Question two- should I wear a veil?  I am worried about beach & wind!

Re: Bouquet, Dress, & Veil!

  • For a beach wedding, I wouldn't wear a veil unless it was a birdcage.

As for flowers, you should use whatever flowers you like. Maybe talk to a florist and see what they can do about incorporating colours and calla lillies.

  • Flowers -- I think a color would look really nice.  Maybe you could carry a colored bouquet and your bridesmaids can carry a contrasting color or even white.   Any color would look awesome.  I think that against a beach background a little bit of color would really pop.

Veil - I would honestly skip it if I were you.  Windy beaches and veils don't mix.   You can do a jeweled comb/tiara or flower in your hair for ornamentation.   I usually recommend fascinators and birdcage veils as well, but I'm not sure how well those would go with a beach wedding.

As far as the veil, yeah, I can see your concerns.  I had bridal pictures taken on a beach and it was windy so I didn't wear my veil at all in any of the pictures.  If you get a simple veil that's just attached to a comb you can put it on and remove it easily in case it doesn't work out for your ceremony but you do want a few portraits standing in a more sheltered area where you could wear it.  But it might be something you'll want to shop around for and not spend too much since veils can be pricey!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Here are some beautiful coral bouquets that stood out to me that incorporated calla lilies (also my fav flower).

and roses and calla and orchid combo:

I am a fan of coloured bouquets for the bride.  I like the contrast.

As for the veil, I think if you want to wear one, you absolutely can.  Lots of people do at the beach and it can take some awesome pictures.  It all comes down to whether or not you want to wear one at all.
