Talking to Americans

My FI had to call Vistaprint to deal with our order.

Our postal code has the letter Z in it, and my fiance kept repeating it

4 - ZED - 7

The rep didn't understand him. ZED?

Finally he said "ZED like in Zebra". And the rep replied, "no, it's ZEE". She had never heard someone call it ZED before.

On the bright side, at least we knew we were talking to a call centre in the USA.

Re: Talking to Americans

  • It's very frustrating how ignorant some Americans are.

  • Sadly, that's just how it is.  And unfortunately, it's not some Americans, it's most of them.  I've had a few ask how we managed to live in igloos in Canada.  *Sigh*   Not much we can do, except try to educate them when possible. Smile

  • I know this post is old... but what is up with all of the American hating? I'm American and I am marrying a Canadian. I will be moving to the GTA area this summer. Based off of my previous experience in Canada, I am actually quite nervous. Most of my youth was spent around Buffalo, NY and I visited Canada frequently. Almost everytime I visited, I was mocked or made fun of because I am American.

I have been chased out of parking lots in Toronto because the guy running it hated George Bush and saw my NY plate (granted this was 6 years ago). He started yelling at my car about how terrible Americans and George Bush are. I wasn't even old enough to have voted for him! I don't think all Canadians voted for Harper....

Then, while meeting some of my fiance's friends they asked me where I was from. I explained to them that I was from Buffalo and the first thing one of them said was, "An American... come on man... you can do better." I know he was just joking, but it still hurt my feelings and I would have never said that about a Canadian or any other nationality.

Why should I be afraid to tell people I am American? I've never mistreated Canadians coming down to the US. In fact, some of them have mistreated me because I am a "stupid American in America." It's not American's fault that we don't get Canadian media. We have enough of our own terrible media. So, many Americans don't know that the postal code includes letters. What's the big deal? Educate- don't hate. We all have things to learn from each other.

Of course I know that "z" is pronounced "zed" in Canada. Or that you call it a garburator. Maybe, people should not generalize large groups. Why should I receive hatred when I tell someone where I am from?

And... I've been living in Taiwan for 3 years. Chinese does not have an alphabet, it has character and a phonic symbol system for learning.

I apologize for the long rant. But... my plane ticket is booked for July 12th and I am beginning to get scared about being ostracized by Canadians because my arrival date is getting close, then I run into this thread while planning my wedding.
