Crap. I might be contributing to a backyard breeder.

My FI and I have been looking for a Bernese Mountain Dog for a REALLY long time now, as we want to find one from a reputable breeder and such. So, we saved up money, and we finally managed to find a pup from a breed steward in Northern California, and everything seemed perfect, and so I put down a deposit. After the initial excitement faded, I went back to look at the pictures of the parents (Charmante and Hudson) that she had e-mailed me and compared them to the pictures she has on her website, and the pictures don't match up. Also, now that I've put down a deposit, she told me that puppy choice is first come first serve, rather than her choosing and placing. All the health stuff checked out on the parents, and they're both certified for all the things that Berners need to be checked for, but now I'm worried that those dogs actually aren't the parents. Maybe I'm just over thinking things. I sent her an e-mail over the weekend asking for pictures of the puppies, since the first one she sent me was when they were only like 3 weeks old, but she hasn't gotten back to me yet, and normally she responds within an hour. I just sent her an e-mail asking for more pictures of the parents, and pointing out that the initial pictures she sent don't match up. I hope she doesn't feel like I'm accusing her of anything. I'm thinking she just attached the wrong pictures or something. What do you think I should do?

This is the picture of the parents she sent me via e-mail. I'm not sure which is the father and which is the mother.
This picture can't be the mother (Charmante) because the white stripe on its forehead isn't wide enough.

This can't be the mother because the "socks" only cover it's toes on the front two paws, and not the entire paw. This one actually looks like another female that she has, named Trinity.

And here is the picture of the mother, Charmante, from her website for comparison:

And here's a picture of Trinity.

Am I seeing things, or do the pictures really not match up? I'm so confused because she's a breed steward, and has been breeding for 10 years, and I found her from the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America website. I really don't want to support a backyard breeder! Ugh. I know this is totally beebee, but I need you guys to calm me down.

(And yes, I do realize we are being selfish by choosing a purebred dog as opposed to a rescue mutt. We already have 3 rescues, so we decided we want a purebred dog this time around.)

I think the second picture you posted looks like Trinity from the last picture.  She probably just posted the wrong picture for the mother.  I wouldn't stress too much!  Give her some time to respond to you and I'm sure things will work out!

Side note--these dogs are beautiful!! My BF and I have been talking about getting a puppy after we're married and living in a house and this is one kind we both liked =)

Okay, so at least one other person sees it, haha. Yeah, I'm sure it'll be okay because she's been pretty good about most things.

If you do decide on a Berner, make sure you do all your reading. They have SO many health issues, and their lifespan is really short as it is, so if you don't find a good pup, it probably wouldn't live to see its fifth birthday. Frown

Aww, how terrible!  Thanks for the advice.  We're still pretty far away from getting a puppy, so we have plenty of time to research.  Good luck with yours!

You're not the only one who sees it.  The first two pictures are obviously (to me) not the same dog as the one in the third picture.  The second and fourth pictures look similar, but the first picture doesn't look like either dog really...the white stripe on the head is too narrow to be either of them I think.

Good luck!  I'm sure it'll all work out.

You can also ask for the CERF or OFA (i think those are the main genetic testing things) numbers. Then you can search their database sites for the dogs and check for sure that the parents were tested and they are who they say they are.
