Re: how did you pick your DJ?

  • I've asked friends who they used for their weddings. The DJ I am leaning towards, I meet him at the gym. Sometimes vendors have tables advertising their products and one day this DJ was there playing. His set up looked professional and sounded nice and he has a really good price. I'm not really picky about the music and was even considering using a MP3 player so picking a DJ is pretty simple for me. I've also looked for some DJs on craiglist. One DJ I found had a video demo on his website so you could get feel for his style. Also bridal shows would be a good way of finding a DJ too.

  • I asked several friends that were recently married what ended up being their best choice  made for their wedding and one girl who had a very expensive fancy wedding raved about her DJ being the best part. I ended up choosing that one and it also ended up being one of my top two choices for my own. I used Ron Johnson from night and day productions.
  • My brother got married a few years ago and used Mike Staff...the DJ was phenomenal so it was a no-brainer for me to use them.

I suggest that if you are looking for specific questions to ask that you pick up a wedding planner book from a bookstore like Barnes n Noble in Royal Oak.  I went in there the other day and browsed through various wedding planning books until I found one that was the best for me.  Many are good that have tabs and lists of questions to ask vendors like DJs, places to take notes, places to keep receipts, etc.

But I went for Mike Staff and am happy with their interaction, professionalism and responsiveness.  I got them from a combo of reviews on this board and the knot recommended vendors for our area.
  • Also, something else that will help is if you go to a place like Mike Staff they have videos of the DJs.  You can sit down and take your time looking at different DJs to see if any of them strikes you as being the one.  Many companies do this and it's a good way to choose.  I also bundled it with a videography pkg to save money.  The last vendor review sticky on this board gave my DJ an A+ for a wedding in September.  And check out the reviews on websites like wedding channel to see what other brides thought of their DJs.
  • uhm...this may be a stupid queston but what is the difference between this site and the wedding channel? they are both owned by theknot??
  • I used Mike Staff also...the DJ was amazing. They send you a link so you can view the DJ's video profiles and select the one that gives you good vibes

  • I looked at the reviews on the board. Narrowed it down to like for 4 and then let's looked at prices. I booked JD entertainment

  • The DJ wasn't a really big deal for us, because we had a small wedding, and didn't expecdt a big blow-out all night dance-a-thon. We are in our 50's, as were most of our guests. I think it's more important to young people.

I went with one that was recommended by a former Knottie, Davis Entertainment.

They had a veteran's discount (my hubby is a vet), and provided bartenders, which we also needed to hire. He also officiates weddings, so we hired him for that too, but I would not recommend him for that.

Our only complaint was that he didn't seem to have a lot of the songs released in the most recent years, ie last 3-4. Our teenaged kids kept asking for songs later at night, he never played them. I didn't know this until later, but I suspect he may not have had them. He's abolutely great with oldies though, Motown, etc.

I think for everything we got, DJ, bartenders and officiant it was less than $800.
  • I got a lot of recommendations from here and some friends.  I talked to a ton of DJs and went basically with who had the personality I was looking for and could play all the music we wanted.  Also, a huge factor was sound quality.  So many DJs can play music but can't really hook up a system correction to have the music sound like it should.

We had Mike Ziamba, owner of The Music Butler be our DJ.  His personality was perfect for us (not cheesy, great attitude, and said just enough as an MC), had the music we wanted, and most importantly actually sounded good.

  • Just don't do what my sister did. She hired a guy who advertised on craigslist because he was a lot cheaper than everybody else. He was really unprofessional (like asking her other vendors for copies of their contracts and butting into the best man's toast with his own weird toast) and he played the dirty version of Enrique Iglesias' song "Tonight I'm Loving You" with kids there and everything.

Elite Entertainment does this also. We talked with both elite entertainment and mike staff and although they are similar we found elite entertainment to have a better deal, we got dk, photographer and a photobooth from them
