Rose Barn in North Park - and, ideas for other raw spaces??

Hi all --
Does anyone have any experience booking the Rose Barn in North Park for anything - particularly for a Saturday event??  Or know someone who might??  (I'm not wondering about the experience of using it for the wedding as much as I'm wondering if booking it is truly as insane as the woman at the park's office told me it is... she said that to book a building there, you have to show up in person one-year-to-the-date ahead of time -- ok, I can handle that -- but that people sometimes camp out at midnight for the more popular venues a year in advance - the office opens at 8:30am.  I could not ever, ever bring myself to do that for the sake of my wedding... and even if I could, my fiance would call this thing off for fear I've gone insane...)  I've talked to a lot of people who have BEEN to events there but they're always for school or church events or whatever, and no one seems to know anyone who's actually done the booking. We have an event planner working with us who has us sold on using it, but this booking process sounds nuts to me - I don't know if I could bring myself to think ANY venue was worth doing that.

In lieu of that -- any equally cool, raw spaces in the area anyone's come across? (not including the Union Project... I can't get past the sloped floor, unfortunately, and I'm not convinced we couldn't do better price-wise). We'd LOVE something big enough to hold everyone in case of rain but with an option to spill outside.  We're looking for fall 2012 (I should also note that, for various reasons beyond our control -- namely, three teachers from out-of-town in the wedding party who could not possibly get a day off to make it down for a Friday evening wedding - Fridays are out unless it's in the summer... and I reaaaaaaaally don't want to risk a non-AC'd venue on a 95 degree day).  I'm not TERRIBLY picky about the 'spilling outside' thing, that's just my ideal.  I'm not feeling any of the more inclusive places around -- will be going to see the Mayernick Center Saturday, but I want to do more on our own than they let you do (e.g. I really feel no need for having a bartender, which appears to be required, though I need to figure that out --I've been to big, fun parties before where people were able to manage getting drinks without one.. there's also a $3.25/person drink fee before alcohol that appears mandatory -- and that alone would eat up about 3/4 of what we'd pay for EVERYthing if we did it on our own...).  Anyway, I'm just more of a DIYer than many of the places we've looked into thus far allow, so am hoping there may be others with a similar mindset who may have ideas for a 'blank slate' kind of space... Thanks!! :)

Jay Verno Studio in the South Side is a really blank slate. But, you would have rent everything (i.e. tables and chairs) which can get expensive.

I would also advise you to have a bartender, even if you do go for the Rose Barn. It's important to have someone in charge of handing out alcohol.

Thanks for the feedback -- I'm getting the sense that Jay Verne is not w/in our range unfortunately...have found a few more possibilities just goggling including spaces at RMU and the Three Rivers Rowing Association.

Re: the bartender --to be honest -- the people making up our guest list are about 1/5 children under 7, 1/5 my fiance's family, none of whom drink more than wine occasionally, 1/5 my friends (mainly in their 30s, most of whom are parents of the little children mentioned previously), 1/5 my family (I'm the youngest, so no one younger than 30 there), and 1/5 friends of my family (mostly older couples, many being parents of the 30 year olds mentioned previously and grandparents of said children-under 7 :).  We're going to put out beer (bottles and kegs), wine bottles (maybe even boxes, we're classy like that!),  and maybe a margarita (my favorite!:) machine, and I'm confident this group can handle that ;)  We have a friend who works as a bartender who initially offered to BE our bartender, but we told him we really don't think that's necessary -- but we'll still take up his offer to have him monitor the drink table to keep it stocked (since we won't put it all out at once) and I'm sure it's gonna be ok.  If we were having more people in their 20s (and no offense to anyone in their 20s - I was way funner back then, too) - I'd be more nervous, but while this group will be lively, they'll also be pretty tame! ;)

Mattress Factory is pretty raw, as is the New Hazlett Theatre (Both raw, but cool). Totally different than a barn wedding though.

awesome, thanks -- I'm planning to call the Mattress Factory tomorrow.  Honestly, I'm pretty open minded at this point -- rustic would be awesome, but so would being able to afford a house downpayment sometime in the near future! ;)  So at a point, I'll take what I can get, especially if it frees up money to do cool things with the space.

We did contact the Hazlett theater... someone mentioned in a post about it elsewhere on here that to serve alcohol at your event (and I *think* I remember hearing at one point it was BYO) that you had to hire some type of artist for the event (like a harpist), which I'd heard awhile back as well.  I guess they abandoned that idea, because in the info they sent us it says --
Alcohol service is dependent on what you would like to serve your guests and the duration for which you want to serve it. Packages range from $20-$40/person for a 5-hour event to give you a ballpark idea. Also of note in the service area is that we do not require a specific caterer and that you chose your own, alternately we can recommend caterers who have done quality work in our space before.

I read this like four times to see if I was reading it wrong but I don't think that I am -- I'm guessing I'm not the only person out there that would think the $20 minimum fee for alcohol per person is pretty cost-prohibitive and just not necessary (or what our friends/family would ever expect) here. So that effectively rules out them for us, for the reasons noted above... Some of my friends can certainly party, but I don't think some of these people have drank $20 worth of liquor total over the course of their lives...

We checked out Jay verno and it does include table and chairs. But it also costs a minimum of 3700 plus 850 more if you want to use the photo booth. We're having a Sunday wedding in Summer so A/C is a big concern for us. And I suspect that Jay was giving us the reduced rate b/c Sundays are less popular.

We might book the Pittsburgh Opera Facility. Its rustic/industrial. There is parking nearby and it has A/C but no outdoor space (which is the one thing I really hate to have to compromise on b/c I had my hear set on an outdoor ceremony)
Anyways, the chairs are ugly gold and pinkish red banquet chairs but they are included int he 1700 dollar fee and they seem pretty flexible insofar as alcohol and caterers are concerned. If you have more than 50 people they do have up to 350 chairs but only about 6 round tables so you might have to rent a few of those.

The linens that are included are black, but its your choice whether to bring in your own or use theirs.

Plus the money goes to the Pittsburgh Opera and not just a private business. ANd our arts need more funding!!!

    Hi Simona --
I've been trying to get in touch w/ the Pgh Opera Company to no avail. I've only tried twice (leaving a message both times) but I've also heard that they are tough to get in touch w/ for whatever reason.  (Also -- I'm not seeing any $1700 rate on their site, just the $1400 as highest).
It sounds like you and I pretty much want the exact same things -- I'd prefer a venue that can accomodate both ceremony/reception, an outdoor ceremony with the option to move it inside for rain, a venue around $1500 or less that lets us do whatever we want, etc etc etc.  If you have any luck booking anywhere, please let me know and I will do the same... once we get this settled, I have a list that I'll try to post... somewhere... of all the offbeat venues we've found.  Like I keep seeing on here that one of the only places around that will allow you to bring in your own caterer is the Mattress Factory (which I love, but is about $1000 more than we want to spend) -- and I have found at least 20 more at this point, it's just a matter of whether they work for us or not, and whether you want to put the money/time/energy into making it a cool space (we do).  There's a website - indiebride.com -- where there used to be a really active Pittsburgh thread a few years ago when my friend got married for people that were looking for these types of arrangements (i.e. a space where you can do whatever you want with)... unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much local discussion there at the moment... maybe that can change, though! :D

I understand your feelings about a bartender, but a lot of places won't let guests that double as a vendor or even a bartender to drink at all.

thanks aashley for the feedback, and i do understand that's the case some places -- we're finding that it's just not the case everywhere, though.  again, we're looking for (and have had some luck finding possibilities, it's just a matter of finding the best place for us) -- literally spaces that you rent for x amount of money for x hours and those are all the demands (besides clean up) they put on you. (like the Rose Barn -- you'd have to pay the county a fee to serve alcohol, but once you do that, you are on your own... people have parties all the time at North Park where you just put out kegs... I'm going to one tonight, ha!)  But in any case, requiring a bartender (guest, paid, or otherwise) is not a dealbreaker of any kind for us at all, it's just one more consideration in all of this -- if the price is reasonable enough we have no issue with hiring a bartender but if you're one of these places that doesn't require it of us, we know our guests well enough to know it's not necessary.
