Chocolate Fountain

Does having a chocolate fountain at the reception count as a favor? I only ask because a lot of people have candy bars as favors (but then again, you can't exactly dip something in chocolate and take it home for later). Thoughts?

I wouldn't exactly consider a chocolate fountain a favor, but favors aren't required by any means. If you would prefer to use the fountain, and not have additional take-home favors, that's completely acceptable. Keep in mind that many edible favors are eaten before guests leave the reception anyway...if you want to use a chocolate fountatin, go for it. :)

I definitely would not count it as a favor.  It is more of an extra dessert option.  IMO chocolate fountains gross me out.  You never know who would be dipping what in them and if you have kids at the reception you are gauranteed that they will be sticking their fingers in it, licking off the chocolate and repeating (many times)...I could see a few adults doing this as well.  But yet the same can be said with a candy bar...people could just reach in and grab a handful of M&Ms with dirty hands as well.  I guess for a candy bar I would stick with pre-wrapped candy.  And yes I know I sound a little like a germaphob but I have been to weddings with chocolate fountains and after a few drinks some of the guests were sticking their tongues in the fountain...ick!

We would be hiring a chocolate fountain rental company that provides the fountain as well as someone who stands there during the duration of service (generally 2.5 hours) to monitor use and make sure kids don't do that sort of thing. Also, since it will be there during dinner hours, I would hope my guests would not be THAT drunk already. I've also been a wedding with a chocolate fountain (where I got the idea), and nothing like what you suggested took place...what kind of favors are you offering?

Phew...that's good about the attendant being there during service.  Funny enough I am a huge chocolate junkie so when I saw gross things being done to the lovely chocolate I got a little peeved.  Also, I have to say, that the wedding I was referring to wasn't the classiest peope around.

For my favors I am definitely doing something edible.  What better way to say thank you then a yummy treat!  I am thinking about chocolate covered pretzels or DIY wrapped hershey bars (again...chocolate junkie).  I am just afraid that since my wedding is in July, and even though we will be inside with air conditioning, that the chocolate will start to melt.

I agree, I wouldn't count it as a favor, but I would count it as another dessert option.

I really don't think it would be a "favor."

I wouldn't count it as a favor, but if you want to skip favors all together then that's fine.
