Long Layover Question

Some of the flights I'm looking at for our honeymoon have extremely long layovers such as arriving at 6pm and departing for the next leg of the flight the next day at 2pm.

My question is, in a normal layover of a couple hours, your luggage gets transferred to the next airplane and you never see it or worry about it.  If we took one of these long layover flights, we would leave the airport and visit the city we were in and stay in a hotel overnight.  Would our luggage stay in the airport and make it on the next leg as on a "normal short" layover, or do they give it to you?  I've never done a longer layover that would allow me to leave the airport.

Re: Long Layover Question

  • Your luggage stays at the airport because you aren't at your final destination yet.

  • I think the pp is correct, but I would call the airline you're looking at booking with and make sure.

It would also depend on how you booked your tickets.  If you booked the flight starting at point A and ending at point B, and the layover is in between those two points, your luggage should automatically be handled.

If you booked starting at point A, ending at point B. Then started all over again in the morning to your final destination, you'd need to get your luggage and bring it with you overnight.  Does that make sense?

  • You should def. check with the airliner because there can be discrepancies between them. Most of the time they let you leave your baggage checked. However, there are some instances where if you leave the airport, you have to take your luggage with you.

  • going-if the airlines can, they will send your luggage along wtih you on your flight to your final destination so that you dont have to recheck at layover. you need to ask about this when you book.

for returning, if you're landing in one airport in the us from a foreign country and then flying to another airport you'll ahve to collect your luggage, go through customs and then have your luggage rechecked and go back through security.

Ali is right about retuning from a foreign country.  You'd have to claim your luggage at your first US port of entry.

Going from the US, you can ask for luggage to be checked all the way through to your final destination so you don't have to claim them at each layover.  We actually planned our honeymoon to have 2 long layovers so we could spend the night in Seattle and Seoul on our way over but didn't want to be stuck with our larger suitcases for each hotel night stay.

I'd check with your airline.  We also have a layover, and they are two different airlines and they aren't partner airlines, so we have to pick up our luggage and recheck it for the next flight.
