Yard Games at Outdoor Wedding?

Hey ladies,

We are planning a simple, but fun outdoor/backyard wedding for October.  I've seen several pictures of weddings where there are games like bocce ball, horseshoes, and badminton.  I was just wondering if any of you included these games in your outdoor wedding, or if you've ever been to a wedding that did? Just wondering what your thoughts and experiences were!

i haven't attended a wedding where they had games, but it DOES sound like fun!

I found this pic online that even makes it look a tad elegant.

  • I asked my DOC about cornhole and she said she has seen it at a couple of weddings, but no one played.
  • I think it depends a) what people are wearing and b) how formal your event is. If it's casual, I'd totally consider cornhole, boccee, etc.

Mixing alcohol and horseshoes makes me nervous!
  • Proper horseshoe playing requires alcohol.

I think having lawn games like a lot of fun.

  • I agree with PP, I think it sounds like a lot of fun, however if you are sending the invite and it sounds more formal then not a lot of people will play in their more dressier clothes. But if you maybe have family members spread the word then I think people will have a great time!

  • We'll be having bocce ball and croquet at ours.  I figure those can be played easily without messing up nice clothes, and it'll give diversion for people that don't dance (or can't, if you're like me!)
  • We are planning on having bocce ball, croquet and lasso golf. Possible more, not sure yet.
  • We'll have Chinese horseshoes and Frisknock (Norwegian Horseshoes?) for sure. Tons of people will play.
  • I like the idea of bocce ball as an outdoor game, croquet would fun too.

  • I'm so glad to hear that others are doing this as well! Are you guys borrowing games or did you own them before? Or are you buying them from somewhere? If you're buying, I'd love to know where you're getting them from!
  • We are also doing yard games at our reception, we will do the standard ones and then also have some hula hoops, crazy bubbles and frisbees etc. for the kids...
We are either borrowing and looking for good deals online... if all else fails we will get them at Target... there are some sets there that are around $50 and don't look terrible.
  • I haven't been to a wedding with games.. but I'd sure love to! I saw pics of one in a magazine, similar to the PP's pic. I thought it looked really cute. If you know your guests will be into it, go for it! Just make sure attires is dress-casual. I read that what people most remember of a wedding is the entertainment, so go for it! Have fun! :)
  • I think it sounds fun, and my fiance and I are considering this.  I would suggest calling your local elementary schools and parks and rec departments.  Often they'll loan you games for a weekend for no charge.  Have fun!
  • OHHH!! Thanks so much, ladies! I was worried that our park wedding would be boring. So many wonderful ideas. . . we love bocce, horseshoes (of course, there will be beer!) There's also a baseball field nearby our wedding/reception site. Maybe I'll ask if it will be available!

Good luck and Best Wishes to ALL!!!
  • we will be having those kinds of games at our vow renewal september 15.  check in with me after that. donnae@surewest.net
i expect it to be alot of fun!
