wedding sweepstake scams

So I apparently got entered into a wedding sweepstakes from 'Simplicity Gourmet', I haven't been to any wedding expos yet so the only other way I got entered was because knot sent my info to them (i'm not registered with any other wedding sites).

It's one of these things where you go to their little show, take a survey about their cooking products and they do a little cooking show for you and you automatically get prizes: 3 day/2 night trip, discounts on their products, discounts on other wedding stuff like invites etc etc.

I also know that these things can sometimes be a scam where you have to sign a contract to buy or use some of their services, even though they say on the phone you have no obligation to buy. But this is one company I haven't heard of yet.

Has anybody recieved  a similar invite/prize package from this company? Was it a scam or was it legitimate? Again the company name is 'Simplicity Gourmet'. Thanks in advance.

Re: wedding sweepstake scams

  • Everyone "wins" with these type of companies.  They aren't scams, per se - many companies are legitimate.  However, you have to jump through hoops to get anything out of them, and in general, they are more problems than they are worth.

    Just walk away.

  • They harassed me to no end when I was engaged.  They called me and told me I won a raffle at a bridal show I had attended.  So I asked what I won and they said I chance to watch a demonstration, blah blah blah.  I hung up.  They might not technically be scams, but IMO, they are scams.

  • Not for that company specifically but the first time I got married I had this happen to me. They called and said that I won a honeymoon trip. When I went into the hotel to get it, I had to sit through a cooking demo for about two hours with my fiance and then they proceeded to 'sell us' cookware. At which point they told us that we didn't get the trip if we didn't buy it. The brand of dishes was Royal Prestige, and we ended up buying it... it was $1400 pots and pans!
After the fact when we got home with our 'trip certicates' and looked into the hotels we could not find ANYTHING for them online and when we called they told us we had to put a little more money into the trip to be able to go on it.
I felt totally taken advantage of for the longest time because we were stupid enough to 'finance' the pots and pans. Yes, to most people that sounds absolutely ridiculous I know.
Several years later, I'm getting re-married and have not heard from any of these types of people this time around but I do feel sorry for the first one that tries to take advantage of me this time.
I do however like the pots and pans, they are really nice... but that is besides the point. The business practice is just wrong.
