When should I start thinking about alterations?

Hey ladies,I bought my dress at a sample sale in July, and I wasn't planning on getting alterations done.
I have since realized that the train needs to be bustled (its longerthen I remembered) and my bust has gotten bigger so that paqrt of the dress is starting to feel too tight.
My question is, when do I start the alterations process/ how long should it take all together?
TIA

Re: When should I start thinking about alterations?

  • My seamstress told me that you need at least three appointments to make sure that everything is perfect.  I went for my first one last night...I'll go for my second one on the Jan. 20th, and the last one will be the beginning of June (wedding is the 23rd)

That way, if she needs to change anything, she has plenty of time!  :)

    Hope this helps!

  • i've already had my first dress fitting.  this christmas i will have my second one and then i will have my final one about a week before the wedding.  but my dress is in another state and i have to plan my fittings on when i visit my parents.  from my understanding, by your second fitting, they want you to be roughly the size that you will be at your wedding because that's when major alterations will be done.  at my first one she took in the waist a bit and did the bustle.

  • My consultant told me that we wouldn't need to start alterations until closer to the wedding.  She suggested to me that I start in March.  My dress doesn't really need too many alterations though so I would ask the place where you're planning on doing the alterations to get their suggestions.
  • I think I'm going to start mine in March and have the last fitting just before the wedding. But, I want to take bridal portraits so I'm not sure how that's going to work with the fittings...
  • I will probably start mine in March. My seamstress said it normally takes three appointments as well and that the last one should be very close to the wedding.

  • I am getting my dress altered in January because my bridal portraits are in March. I will get it recleaned/steamed before the wedding.

  • Thanks everyone, it sounds like I have a little time before I need to figure this out!

  • I'm going to start in late March/early April
  • I would start now, you never know what will come up with you, your dress, or your seamstress.

I have my first appointment on the 19th of this month.

I'd rather just be safe. ;)

  • I'm also waiting until late March/early April.  I'm not doing anything with it before the wedding (bridal portraits, etc) and that's the timeline I've heard.

  • My first fitting is march 27th as suggested by the alterations department.

  • I haven't scheduled mine yet but I'll probably start in March. My dress fits perfectly, so providing I stay at my current weight the only thing I need is a bustle. I'm not sure if you can clean lace, but I definitely want to do what I can to clean it up before the wedding!
