WEDDING CAKE DILEMA!

I picked out a cake off a friends FB page who does cakes...My Mom and I have both tried to email and call and post on her page so we could discuss this cake...it is absolutely gorgeous! We have gotten no reply from her :(  Well, we went to Heaven Sent wedding chapel just to check out what they offer and its pretty much everything..the prices are great for our bouquets so we are thinking about ordering from there...well while we were in there looking through books of flowers that they made, we looked through their wedding cake books..I myself have my mind set on this cake BUT it had to have fondant to make it have the quilted design I want.  My Mom and I both agree we have had some not so good fondant in the past, tasted like crepe paper! ugh.  well the lady at Heave Sent was talking about how great their cakes are and they had a different kind of fondant...So she goes and gets us a sample of the fondant and it was not THAT bad.  So my Mom called a couple of weeks ago and set up an appointment for yesterday at 3 to taste "the final product' which is the cake, with a layer of buttercream frosting with a thin layer of fondant...we go there and there was some misunderstanding they said, the girl that bakes the cakes was out, there was nothing written down about our appointment..ok, this isn't getting off to a good start!  So we were given two iced cupcakes and some of their fondant, I just scooped off a bunch of the icing and tried to flatten out the fondant by hand the best I could, I tried to reinvent what this would be like but hell, Im not a cake decorator! Im so anxious over this cake..My Mom is trying to talk me out of it and to go with a buttercream frosting with a different style of cake but my heart is set on this beautiful cake..They had given Mom a preliminary price of 396 and that includes the 25 buck delivery charge and will serve 100 ppl...The girl who makes the cakes is supposed to call my Mom tomorrow to set up ANOTHER appt to taste the cake the way it is supposed to be made...I just am at my wits end as is my mother with this fondant..it has became our new F word LOL!  So is there ANYONE in the Hamilton or Fairfield area that does wedding cakes?

  • We went with A Spoon Fulla Sugar. I've never been a cake eater, but this was literally the most delicious cake I've ever had. SO GOOD.

Your mom is probably right about the buttercream. If you're worried about the taste then buttercream is your best bet. I don't think anyone will ever devise a fondant that tastes better than a buttercream. On the other hand, maybe there is someone out there who can create that quilted look without using fondant. Call around? Regardless, go with what you like. Loads of people don't even eat cake at weddings (I used to be one of them!).

    Good luck!

I make cakes as a hobby. I did a wedding cake last weekend that had quilting and it was on buttercream. I am not sure why they are telling you it must be fondant...  I also hate fondant.
  • I second LizzieRB's response - quilting can be done on buttercream.

I also agree with Emilou02, A Spoon Fulla Sugar is great! Below is a picture from A Spoon Full's facebook that looks like a quilting pattern. Good Luck. I have no affiliation with them, just a love for their cake and hoping to help. :)

    Also...

Just as an FYI to anyone interested, I just saw via their FB page that they are opening a frozen yogurt shop in West Chester, similar to Orange Leaf and Yagoot except they offer their cakes and pasteries as the base for the yogurt. I haven't stopped up yet...but if this place is anything like their cake, I will be making frequent trips to West Chester. It's called A Cherry on Top http://www.acherryontop.biz/

  • Here is My beauty! I fell in love with it the moment I saw it...Since this post, my mom called around and talked to 3 bakers, one at Heaven Sent Wedding Chapel wanted 500 and then she talked to 2 ladies who do them out of their home, one wanted 250 and the other 300 and that is with delivery, the platter to lift the cake...We are going for a cake tasting next week..but in case anyone is looking, Royal Icing by Jillie is the one I think we are going with, pending the taste test. One of my Moms friends have tried numerous cakes by her and gave rave reviews!

So, it CAN be done? You guys are godsends! My Mom and I know nothing about cakes, except we love them LOL...But it is great to hear that it can be accomplished with buttercream, which will also probably bring the price down I would think?  So looking at my cake, do you think it can all be done with buttercream? Im getting really excited at the idea! LOL! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

The only dif with the buttercream quilting is it will not be as "puffy" as a fondant quilt. Does that make sense? HOWEVER I think its far better to taste good that look puffier.

    Also, please don't pay 500.
