Just Engaged and Proposals

budget

My FI and I just got engaged over Christmas.  We are trying to figure out a budget so we can look for a venue early as we live over 5 hours away from where we'll get married.  I have no idea how to figure out how much we can afford!  We know our parents will help but no one has offered out any numbers.  Does anyone have any advice on how to discuss this with your parents?  Also, any tips on how you figured out your budget?

Re: budget

  • Do not assume that your parents will help. Come up with a budget and timeframe you and your FI can afford alone. Then say, "Mom and Dad, X and I are are planning on around X guests in month 201X." After you say that either your parents will offer or they will be silent. If they are silent, you know you are on your own. But remember that if your parents help, they get a say in the wedding. Pay=Say

  • I would sit down and talk with both sets of parents about what they are comfortable with contributing, but be clear that they don't have to.  I would start looking at venues online to see base prices for where you are.  My area (northen NJ) range from $70-150/pp.  So with approx 120 guests that's over 7k alone.

The best place to start is research.  You also want to figure out what your splurge items are (photography, band, etc).  Also picture your wedding.  An outdoor wedding gives you the ability to save money by getting married in a park.  It's a lot of research =)
