How much cake should I get???

We are having about 70-80 guests. I want four tier cake with 3 flavors for the guests and the top tier for us. How many servings should I buy?

100 servings should be more than enough. :)

Well.... Do you think your guests will eat the cake? If so then I'd get a little more cake than you have guests. If you have extras you could always send your guests home with the leftover cake.

i think more like 120 servings

A 12" round, 10" round, 8" round and 6" round will serve 120 people (according to the Wilton standard of 1" x 2" x 4" slice of cake).  The 6" serves 12 and since you are saving that tier the total for the rest of the cake is 108 servings.  That is more than plenty since you are expecting less than 108 guests and not everyone eats cake (and some eat more than 1 piece of cake).

If you really want a 4 tier cake - that is your best option.  But remember, you are paying for the # of servings the cake will feed not the # of servings you need it to feed.  You only need 80 servings but the cake will feed 120 so you will pay for 120 servings - not 80.

Never let a cake designer talk you into getting 1-1/2 times more cake than you actually need by the way, or you will be stuck with a lot of leftover cake.

I agree with, er, "415's" assessment: 12", 10", 8", and 6" with saving the 6" for your first anniversary. And yes, you will pay for 120 servings or $x per tier.

I would honestly get 80-90 servings if possible. We got 75 servings, ended up with 68 guests, and had TONS left over.

I have heard that only 80% of the people you invite to the wedding will want cake.

It is more like 60%-70% people show up.  The smaller the wedding the higher number of people will come because the ones invited are your closed family and friends.  The larger the wedding with extended family and friend of a friend invited, the more you can expect to decline because they are not that close.

We invited 73 people to the wedding - 65 people came.  That is an 89% attendance.  If you invite 220-300 people it would be safe to say 60% - 70% will show.  For 220 invited that is 132-154 people.  For 300 invited that is 180-210 people coming.

Either way, if supplying a meal at the reception and not just cake and punch you could purchase cake using the 60% - 70% rule and should have enough cake.  If only supplying cake and punch I think you should order a piece for each person invited becuase people will eat the cake - they have no other food option.
