Marriage License and changing your name in Illinois

Ok ladies I just got married on 9-9-12 and I need your help/advice. How long does it usually take to get your marriage license back? Can I just go and get a copy? I need to change my social security card before I can do my driver's license I think. I have lots of questions. LOL AHHHHHH

  • Ask the girls on your local boards, you're more likely to get a quick answer.

  • Call the clerk's office and ask them.  They are the only ones who are going to know and be able to give you a range.

  • You usually don't get an actual copy of your marriage certificate without going to the county clerk and paying for it.

Our pastor submitted everything he had to on his end right after the wedding. The week we got back, he was able to give us the "keepsake" certificate which holds absolutely no legal weight at all. In order to get legal copies of our certificate, we went to the county clerk (where we applied for a marriage license prior to our wedding), filled out a form, and paid a small fee. This is what I used at the SS office, DMV, etc.

Oh, and if you couldn't tell, I live in IL!

  • I don't know if you're in Cook County or not, but I went to the records office (same place we got the license) and got copies of the certificate 9 days after our wedding.  Wedding was on a Saturday, so this was the Monday of the following week.  It may vary by county.

Also, I know everyone always says you have to do your SS card first and then everything else - I didn't find that to be true.  I went to the DMV first because it was right across the street from the Daley Center, and all they wanted was my marriage certificate.  In fact, that's all anyone wanted.  And don't worry about buying too many copies, because no one keeps it, even if they need to see an original.  Even when I changed my name on my passport (which you have to mail away), they mailed the original back to me.  I bought 4 copies and I certainly didn't need more than 2.

No one ever asked me anything about my SS #.  I did change it there, of course, but you don't need to do it first.

  • We got our license in Lake County, and we pre-paid to have a copy of the finalized license mailed to us after the wedding.  If you didn't do that, you'll need to go back to the County Clerk and request it.

I don't remember the exact timing, but I think it was only a few weeks before we received ours in the mail.

And you do not need an updated SS card in order to get an updated drivers license--the marriage license will suffice.
