Heavy Hor'd'vors for a 6pm wedding?

I am planning an evening wedding with about 200 guests. We are trying to find a way to provide appropriate food for everyone without it costing a fortune. Is it appropriate to serve heavy hor'd'vors after a 6pm wedding?

  • It's still considered dinner time at 6pm so you definitely want the apps to fill people.... typically at least 12-15 pieces per person.
  • As long as you have enough for every person to make a meal out of them you are fine.

  • Yes you could do this but you want to serve something with substance like having carving stations, mini sliders, etc. I would go more toward 15-18 pieces per person. People will be expecting to get as much food as they would if they sat down for a meal. You will also want to make sure there is enough wait staff for all of this food at once. I have been to weddings with just appetizers and went hungry for half the night because the waiter would get about 2 feet out of the door of the kitchen and his tray of food would be gone. Sometimes actually providing a meal can be cheaper depending on your venue. I recently went to a wedding that had food stations. They had a taco bar, hot dogs with every topping you could think of, mac and cheese with tons of mix-ins, sliders, egg rolls and yaki soba noodles, and a dessert station.
  • I know that with my caterer, doing apps only will run be between $8 to $12 a person and doing a meal between $7 to $10. Just be sure it's smart price wise and people get enough to eat. Talk to you caterer (or any caterer if you don't have one yet) and let them know your budget and time of day and see what suggestions they have for you.
  • 6pm is dinnertime so most people would expect dinner. Anyways, you could probably do certain choices of dinners for less than heavy apps. Talk to your caterer before deciding anything.
