Special Diets

OKay, so I'm a vegan, my finace is omni (like most of guests) and there will be at least one severely allergenic person there (peanut/tree nut/dairy/ wheat/eggs/etc...)

I have found a place that does vegan wedding cakes and am leaning toward a buffet selection and probably a safe plated dinner for the kid with allergies :)

I realize it's my wedding so obviously I should have food to eat but from an economical standpoint should I get veggie dishes or should I just order a few veggie apps and, I dunno, a plated dinner for myself?

any ideas on how this usually goes at weddings, lol? haven't been to a ton myself and this is a first for both of us.

I think your idea of a safe plated dinner for the allergic child and a buffet are just fine.  You can load up the buffet with dishes that you will eat and one or two with meat.  If you don't point out that things are vegan, most people won't even notice.  Or do an "around the world" buffet with Indian, Mexican, etc. dishes - a great way to hide the fact that there's no meat!

Definitely provide the kid with allergies a special meal. As for you being vegan that is your call. You can do either the buffet loaded with things you would eat and then some meat items to make sure everyone is pleased. Or have a more common buffet with some veggie items for apps and then give yourself a plated meal as well. It is not uncommon for caterers to offer vegetarian plated meals, even vegan ones. So it would not be out of place to see that at a wedding, IMO.

I'm vegan and I decided to go with a vegetarian plated meal with passed apps - we were actually given extra apps since veggie is cheaper :) I think it depends on your guests and also you and your reasons for being vegan. I know a lot of my guests are open to vegetarian meals, are vegetarian themselves, or some of my family have "vegetarian days" in their house because they want to limit meat but don't want to cut it. So for the most part they will be fine. one of the meals options is eggplant parm which is the favorite Italian choice of a lot of my older less vegan friendly family.

I think a plated dinner for someone with severe dietary restrictions is a great idea, because you never know about contamination with a buffet.

As for the other food, it's up to you. I'm an ovo/lacto vegetarian and my husband and I did an entirely vegetarian wedding. Our catering was delicious and people really enjoyed the food. Offer 1) what you're comfortable with and 2) what tastes good. Don't worry so much about exactly what it is, as long as it's delicious and you think a good amount of people will eat it.

I'm leaning towards a buffet with at least one vegan entree option and a few edible appetizers for me. My little guest with allergies will definitely get his own plated meal- I'll probably need to go the route of getting a recommedation from mom and dad for what kind of food because besides being very limited, he is a typical five-year-old and can be picky.

I don't think I'd leave the meat out entirely because it's his wedding too so he should have his ribs, chicken, shrimp, whatever. I hadn't thought that veggie appetizers might be less expensive and therfore we might be able to get more apps overall! that sounds like a plan :)
