  The only financial obligation we were under was to put a credit card number on file, so we would be charged if there was any damage to the rooms our guests were in. There wasn't, and it seemed more of a formality than anything.
  
  I've never heard of having to pay to reserve a block of rooms. Your guests, as a general rule, are responsible for paying for their own accommodations.

  If any hotel tells you that you are responsible for any unused rooms, look elsewhere.  You should have no problem finding a hotel that doesn't require any financial commitment from you.
  
  Typically you'll book a block of rooms and the rooms will be released after a certain amount of time (or time before tthe wedding.)  For example, ours will be released a month before the wedding.
  
  ETA:  You should come over and join the Detroit board (if you haven't already.)  All the girls are wonderful!

  I found a hotel that said they would charge me for any unused rooms (ie. if I blocked off 10 rooms and only 8 were used then I would be charged for 2 rooms.)  I ran away from that like a bad date!  Different hotels have different policies.  Ask what kinds of rooms your guests would be able to book.  One hotel would only offer rooms with a single queen bed.  I asked them about families who have kids and they said they would block off one room with two queen beds but that was it.  Uhhh...no thanks!  The third hotel was a charm.  They will even let me block off additional rooms should more of my guests want to stay there.  And they took me into a room to let me see the newly remodeled design.  Call around & ask questions!

  This depends on the hotel and what their policies are.  Make sure you ask each hotel whether there is any financial obligation by you, and don't book hotels that require you to book a certain percentage of the rooms or charge you for unbooked rooms.  I would not be willing to put a credit card down for any reason, including damage to the rooms - that should be the responsibility of the guests who are staying there.

  It all depends on the hotel. I completely agree with the pp's, if a hotel is going to hold you financially responsible for any unsused or damaged rooms, run away. The amount of rooms they will hold for you also varies as well. Most hotels I found said they would hold ten rooms and then open more if those ten rooms booked. Some hotels will also throw in a free shuttle to the ceremony/reception if a certain number of rooms are booked. Ask about any perks they can throw in as well.

  I got out of using a credit card. I just send the signed paperwork back to them and "forgot" to put my CC number on the form. They never called me back to tell me that they needed it. Maybe I just lucked out.

  It shouldn't.  If they tell you you that you're obligated to pay for anything or give them credit card information, find a new hotel.
  
  What should happen is they will set aside a block of rooms at a discounted rate for your guests to make sure they can get rooms.  Guests can call the hotel to book a room at that discounted rate, which would be at their own cost.  After X date, the hotel will put any unbooked rooms back into their system to be reserved by the public.

  What our hotel did was block off an X amt of rooms and when guests called it them put down their CC # and got a discounted rate.  We had a deadline date to release any unreserved rooms or we'd end up paying for it.  That deadline was yesterday so I just called and had them release it.  We didn't pay anything OR have to put down our CC # first.
