im not catholic but my fiance is-- he would like a representive there from the catholic church (we are having an outdoor ceremony). Im methodist so Ive already got my pastor, but I can't seem to find anyone that is willing to do an outdoor ceremony any suggestions?

P.S we both live out of state and his family is from new jersey that is  why we are having trouble finding someone.

Re: catholic deacon

  • Catholics are bound to canonical form in their marriages in order for them to be considered valid. This includes marrying inside the walls of the Catholic church. (The walls are symbolic of the church community which is benefits from a marriage in the church). The church isn't there merely to be "represented" at a wedding,  a marriage is a vocation in the church. The church takes marriage very seriously-- and many things are expected in  getting married in the church-- formation and preparation for the sacrament, understanding the vows being made, promising to raise children Catholic, etc.

A Catholic who marries outside of the church norms can no longer participate in the sacraments, as they publicly in an invalid marriage (ie...they are not married).

A Catholic may possibly get a dispensation from form for their wedding (having it at a different location then church), but there must be a just reason for it, not just wanting an outdoor ceremony. This dispensation only covers the location of the wedding and ceremony stuff, NOT the actual preperation and promises made to what marriage is.

No deacon or priest will merely "represent" at an outdoor wedding. In order for them to be present at a Catholic's wedding, the marriage must have gone through the proper channels and preparation.

I suggest contacting a priest from the parish nearby you and discuss the situation.
  • thank you! im sure this question is on here alot.
