So this is the picture i brought in and the hair i wanted:

This is what MY hair looked like... hmm

feel like it looked like hair i'd wear to a party or to work... :( does my hair suck or did the stylist just not do it right? i couldnt tell but wasnt pleased

she could see the lack of excitement on my face and tried to pin it up, i thought it looked okay..

liked the back of it

but with the veil........eh......not so much

what the heck am i gonna do with my hair now ????
suggestions?
here is my dress if that helps:

Are you for sure going with that hair stylist?  I say this because I think your hair can definitely be done more like in the photo, and it doesn't look like that stylist knows how to do it that way.  Her curls just aren't at all holding the way they should to be like the photo.

I actually liked it up, but I agree that with the veil it looks kinda funny - I think the little side curls by your ears need to be pinned up too if if you're going to use that veil.

But I don't see any reason that you can't get something more like your photo.  Maybe you need to find someone who's familiar with the more "vintage" styles?  I'd keep looking.

thats what i was thinking when i left.... was like ummmm does she not have much experience with that hair maybe? boo... guess its back to another salon to see what they can do.

I should add - I think they're both pretty on you.  It's just that they're not at all the style you were aiming for (which I love, btw).  I'm sure there are others out there who can do it, and you have time still to find someone.  Good luck!

I agree with Carrie - if you're not set on having your hair done with her, maybe try someone else who can replicate that style.  I don't see why your hair couldn't be done that way.  Without knowing where your wedding is, maybe check out Vain salon in Seattle (they have 2 locations I believe).  When you call a salon I'd recommend telling the person on the phone you're looking for a stylist who can do an awesome old-hollywood-40's-glam hairstyle and see who the person might recommend for the job.  Also, if you can find a few more pics of the same or very similar hairstyle (espcially in a different color hair so hopefully the stylist can see more details of the style) that might help.

You obviously aren't happy and although I'm not a stylist, it looks to me like when she curled your hair, she loosened the barrel curls whereas she should've sprayed them and let them set - that's what my stylist does when she curls my hair - i get those chunky barrel curls until she loosens them with her fingers.

You should show her the picture and tell you in detail of what you want. I can understand by the look of your face your were not happy. Maybe try a new stylist? or an experienced one?

it looks to me like she just didn't tease th front enough.. she only did your bangs, not the whole front of that picture.

i'd try some one else.. if she'll let you try her again for free, i'd bring in another pic that showes the girl from the front so she can see the pinup vintagey thing you're trying to go for.

you could have definitely done that look yourself.

Don't fret though, it'll turn out perfectly. :)

I think it could be a mix. They really didn't do your hair like in the photo but if you are going for a 1940's kind of style there are lots of other ways to do that as well- here is another pic of what it looks like you are going for from different angles, which might help a hairdresser in getting it right.

This is what I was thinking - the picture you have (especially since the girl has dark hair) makes it difficult to tell what the style is.  When I was looking at your pic vs the example, I actually couldn't tell the difference at first because I didn't notice the other side of the hair in the example.  I really think it's best to find a few pictures that show what you want to give your stylist a more mental "3D image" of what you want.

FWIW, I really like how your hair turned out, but I agree it wasn't like the picture and I'm sure you can get someone to do it that way!

I agree with pp.  I think your hair looks pretty down, but its not quite like the pic.  The front isn't high enough and the curls are too loose.  If that's what you want, try someone else.  Although, if your hair is really fine, you might not be able to get exactly what you want, but I think someone could do better than she did.

I also meant to add this too.  Another reason why it's good not to get too set on just one picture - you probably won't look eactly like any of the pictures you find, so it's better to have a more broad idea of what you want that will then translate to your lovely self :)

PS I'm jealous actually of your hair pic, I think it's really pretty!  Are you able to get it to look like that normally?  If so, I'd be interested how!

I agree- your stylist didn't get the whole 40's glam look and instead went for a loose, casual, beachy type hairstyle. She didn't leave the curls as one long curl/ringlet. Like PP said you should call and ask if they specialize in 40's hair dos.

That's one thing I regret. I ran out of time/money and didn't have my hair the way I wanted it.

I actually like your hair in the picture of you in the dress...

What would you think about calling the people who do the Old School Pinups (you know the ones, their ads are in all of Seattle wedding magazines) and asking who does hair for them. Clearly whoever does it has ample experience in those types of styles...

And, remember that for photos, they can do a lot more hair trickery than when you're supposed to actually go through a day with the style - more shellack, fake hair added, and the magic of PhotoShop. I'm still saying that you should work towards your dream hair - just don't forget that sometimes it's like the pictures of food in restaurant ads.

Try The Pinup Salon...they specialize in that 40's glam style look.
  • edited December 2011
I think mergator has your answer!!  I like your hair down WAY better and agree with PP that your hair looks best in the one of you in the dress.  The inspiration pix that you have shouldnt be that difficult to do and I agree that you should keep shopping around for a stylist.  its definately one of the things people will notice at your wedding

the down hair :)  my hair will be curly if I make it (you can see in my wedding pics, and if I could have my stylist come to my apt every morning that would be awesome...). I've sort of gotten a couple different methods I can do, but always looking for new ideas!
  • edited December 2011
I say find another stylist!! I love that pic you have, and if you want it I know there is a stylist who can do it! It's not your hair.
I saw someone else say your stylist just didn't get the 40's glam, and I agree.
    Good luck!

Not sure where you live but I am having my hair done by the stylist at the Gary Manuel Salon downtown (not to be confused with the Institute on Capitol Hill).  Her name is Sunny and she is fabulous!!  A little pricey, but she is quick, and she will ask you if its right every step of the way.  She knew exactly what I wanted, and all you do is bring in a pic of your ideal hairstyle.  She did my hair for my mom's wedding, as well.  If you are set on this hair style, def go to a stylist that can do it right.  So glad that you had this experience, though, because otherwise you would go in blind on your wedding day and be upset.  Plus she's been there for like 10 years so surely she is doing things right!!
