Photography - Unedited Photos?

I am hiring a photographer who is providing edited hi-res photos on a dvd.  HOWEVER, should I also ask for the unretouched photos as well?  Is that important?  Please help!

Sometimes they include that in the contract, but you should ask anyway. You're paying for the services, so might as well have them, right?

No harm in asking, but personally, I don't think it is too big of a deal.  I got over 1000 pictures from my photographer and it was plenty.  A lot of the ones she didn't include were probably ones that were blurry/closed eyes/etc.  It would have been a lot of work for me to go through them all myself.

I asked for the unedited photos--found about 20 great shots that I then had edited too.  I'd recommend it, have all the moments from the whole day.

I really don't see the point. As a photographer, I don't withhold photos from clients that turn out well so you honestly won't be gaining anything but photos that the photographer deemed unworthy. Do you really want that? And if it would just be the same photos but unedited. Again, I ask, why? Do you want the pimple on your face to show? The stray hair? The random bystander in the bg? Doubt it. Save your money. Put it elsewhere. Maybe buy more time with your photog or a higher number of edited images. Then you'll get shots that are worthwhile.
