Antigua?

My FI and I wanted to try something different for a honeymoon and I've been to many places in the caribean, but hadn't heard much about Antigua. When the travel agent showed me the website for the Sandal's resort there, I fell in love! It looks absolutely beautiful so we booked it yesterday!! The reviews I've read have been a bit mixed, and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences to share about antigua, or better yet, at the sandals resort. Thanks so much!

We've been to three Sandals resorts (Grande St. Lucian twice, Sandals Negril and Sandals Antigua) of those Antigua was our least favorite.

The grounds are beautiful, there are friendly cats roaming the grounds which, being a cat person I loved.

Our room was on the Mediterranean side and although very nice,it felt to hotelish and was much farther back from the ocean view pictured on their website.

The food....horrible! Everything was slathered in butter or salt and the buffet compared to the other two was minimal in choices.

I got food poisoning the second full day into our trip. We had gone back to Sandals Grande St. Lucian this past March and had met several couples *one of which has over 170 paid nights in at Sandals resorts* that had also gotten food poisoning at Sandals Antigua. Now of course food poisoning CAN happen anywhere and I do understand that but for several of us (not there at the same time as far as I know of) to get it???

Dependent upon what time of year you go you may wind up with a much older crowd. We were there in March and the crowd seemed to be mostly 50's and above (I'm 36 and dh was 39 at the time).

As for excursions: not near as many as the other two Sandals/islands. However, we did rent a car (right there at the resort for $70) and go off on our own which was fun. We also did an extreme circumnavigation tour which was a lot of fun.

The island its self is beautiful and the locals are very nice. As a whole we liked Antigua just not Sandals. We will someday go back (hoping to catch a good Groupon deal :) but not to Sandals.

Those are the highlights but if your looking for a more detailed review I have that in the link above my siggy pic. There are also reviews from the other two as well as a few hundred pics.

HTH and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

  • I've never been to a Sandals resort, so this will be my first time! We're staying in the caribean section. That sucks you ended up with food poisoning! I ended up with that on a Mexican vacation. We wanted a very relaxing honeymoon, we've done excursions on other vacations and wanted a chill atmoshere this time around. It's disapppointing to hear about the crappy food : ( Thanks for the response!! We'll have to check out St Lucia next time around!

I'd much rather have stayed on the Carribean side as that had the feel of being on an island. We wanted ocean view though. Knowing what I know now about the "ocean view " I would certainly have chosen differently.
The funny thing about the food poisoning is, the year before we were in Mexico. I thought for sure if I was gonna get sick it would have been there : All in all, I at least tried to make the best of it. Hey, at least I didn't gain any weight :
The point is a hm/anniversary/vacation/trip or whatever you want to call it is what YOU make of it. Everybody has their own experiances and there own tastes in foods and lodging.
    Have a great time!
  • We booked our October honeymoon for Sandals Antigua.  My co-worker literally just got back from there and LOVED  LOVED LOVED it.  She did not have one bad word to say about it.   Not one.
  • My co-worker also just returned from her HM there and raved about it. She couldnt say enough good things! This is why we chose to book there also.
  • My uncle went there for his HM and so did a good friend, they both raved about it so we booked too....October this year.  I have read more good reviews than bad ones....besides, the company is more important than the place.  :)
