You know I love you, opinionated ladies...

Which is why I, once again, want your opinions on something WR. So, I am a little obsessed with having poppies as my bouquet. I don't know if that will happen because they are really delicate, impossible to find to buy online, and I don't know if any will be in season. But, and it's a somewhat large but, if I do get to have them as my bouquet flowers, or even if I don't, would it be inappropriate to use paper poppies as boutonnieres for the men in the wedding party?

Our wedding is 11/3, which is about a week off from Remembrance/Veteran's Day. I know poppies are used in Britain and Canada as symbols of remembrance, and are worn on and around that day. I also know that that's probably how I'd be able to find such bouts online (was thinking of going the Etsy route). Is this tacky/irreverent? Or am I just over-thinking things?

Re: You know I love you, opinionated ladies...

  • Have you thought about ordering silk poppies and making your own bouquet so there's no question or worry about them being in season or available?

I don't know how I personally feel about a poppy bout for the guys, only because of the use of them in other countries.  Also I've never seen them for a wedding so it just seems kind of weird to me when I picture it.

What are the guys wearing?  If they are doing tuxes what about just doing pocket squares in coordinating colors instead of bouts?  Or just a white rose bout instead?  I don't know, just my opinion.

  • I agree with beach about looking for silk ones. Flowers can ger darn expensive if they are out of season. About the symbolism, eh. I don't think you need to limit your flowers based on how they are used in other ways. If you like them, then I say use them.

  • Yeah, I'm looking into silk or paper ones, or just seeing if I can replace red poppies with red anemones (they'll be in season by then, as far as I can tell) and a few others.

FI will be in his Mess Dress (his opinion on this is that he's already paid for it and doesn't want to pay to rent a tux or buy a suit, this may change, but that isn't likely), so no bout for him. He'll have two groomsmen, and they'll both be in tuxes, or maybe dark suits (I know that if he's in Mess they should be in tuxes, but I also think that very few people will notice or care about that discrepancy).  I like the rose idea, ideally I'd like it to just be a single flower or sprig of something and nothing too overdone.

  • I LOVE anemones. Just sayin. Until I changed up my color scheme a bit, I was going to have white anemones with dark centers in my bouquets.

  • I also agree with Beach about the rose bouts. Our guys had roses, H had an orchid and my girls had other flowers(I forgot), they all matched perfectly because of the colors though. Also, about silk flowers, I have heard that they could actually even be expensive too. Just throwing it out there.
  • What colors are you looking for exactly and is there a particular kind of poppy that you like?
