Alterations Question

Hi ladies,

Just a quick question since I'm nowhere close to my time to have a fitting yet:

Is it relatively "easy" for a seamstress to change a neckline that runs straight across into a sweetheart neckline?  If so, how much does an alteration like this run?  Mine would not involve working around any beadwork or anything like that.  Just curious as I sit here and go over my wedding budget spreadsheet.

    Yes I had mine done and it was relatively easy. As long as there isn't a lot of boning in the neckline I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult. I had the neckline done, a french bustle added, the sides taken it a little and the petticoat thing trimmed a little in the front all for $110.

    Wow, that's a lot less than I thought!  I don't think mine has a lot of boning in the neckline.  This is my dress: <a href="http://www.alfredangelo.com/collections/productdisplay.aspx?productID=8f8487a5-4db3-486f-9db7-a4d0a82725fb&categoryID=3924ccf5-8546-4e9d-a5f8-6db42b4ded1b&pg=2&colorId1=">Clicky</a>.  This is the dress I saw that is very similar but with a sweetheart neckline:  <a href="http://www.theknot.com/wedding-dress/jacquelin-exclusive/19854?ctx=48:15:-1:-1&src=res">Clicky</a>.  I think the change in the neckline really enhances the dress, so I'm hoping it works.  Thank you for the info!

    Okay, so it's not as easy as a yes or a no.  In some dresses, absolutely.  In others, not so much.  It depends on type of fabric (chiffon and taffeta alter differently), weight of fabric, if there is any kind of structure within the dress (such as boning), etc. 

    Sometimes its as easy as putting a dart into a tuck of fabric to create the illusion.  Other times it's as difficult as truly "re-cutting" the dress.   You might want to e-mail someone like Becky photos of the dress because she will know better than we will as we aren't pro-seamstresses :P

    I think it will depend on how much you love that angular pleating across the top.  You would almost certainly lose that (and what's left might look strange).  I agree that you should shoot and email to Becky or Leighanna and ask their opinion.

    I will definitely e-mail Becky -- I felt kind of weird about doing that since I won't truly be a client of hers for awhile yet, but she sounds sweet so I'm sure she won't mind.  Thanks, everyone! :) I could have solved this whole problem if I had even known of Jacqueline Exclusive before...literally EXACTLY what I was looking for but was $100 cheaper than the AA dress I want to alter...and other than the sweetheart neckline and a few small beading details, they look almost exactly the same!  *headdesk*

    Becky apparently does not do sweetheart necklines anymore and has referred me to her friend, Leighanna, at (972) 986-8067.  Just thought I would post this in case anyone else needs this info now or in the future.

    She will "dart" it into one, but won't restructure a full dress (for clarification)

    I just asked her the same thing about mine :P

    Oh ok -she didn't say anything about that to me.  Just said she didn't cut those anymore and gave me the name and number to her friend.

    I got an e-mail back from Leighanna earlier today and she's not sure if the overlapping at the top of the dress with work in order to make it into a sweetheart.  We are going to chat on the phone at some point this week and see what we need to do to determine this.  I've heard great things about Maybe Sew from the Knotties so they were my second choice anyway.  We'll see what she says...crossing my fingers!
