Protein Shakes

Hi Ladies!
I just wanted to grab some opinions regarding protein shakes. I have a friend who swears by them, and drinks one a little while before every workout. She's always telling me that i should try it, and I'll see some great results with my workout. Does this really have any effect on your workout at all? Or is she just crazy? lol

Re: Protein Shakes

  • Just make sure you work it into your calorie allowance.  Those things can get up there in the numbers. (Banana- 100 calories.  Scoop of protein powder-80 calories. Milk-60 calories...etc)

[QUOTE]The one shes recommended to me is made by herbalife. its got  120 cals per serving. I definitely wouldnt be doing the whole herbalife regiment because i feel like it cant be good to live off shakes like that, and I like food too much to live off of them lol. but if I'm using it just for protein intake and to help my workout become more effective thats okay right??

Yeah, that's exactlyy what I use mine for. Like a protein supplement, to try and reach my goals. It's NOT a meal replacement for me.

I like the flavour of the kind I get, so I just mix mine with water- nothing else, just water and protein powder.
  • protein is great as both a meal replacement as well as post work out or drinking during a workout. There is a lot of different proteins that offer a variety of things they do. All depends on your needs but post workout id say they are great. Always check labels some have high sugar carbs etc. Everyone has preferences I like myofusion or nitrocore 24
  • I noticed a lot of people have been taking drinking protein shakes post workout...this has been a hot topic in several of my bio/sports medicine classes. Interestingly (and I think awesomely), chocolate milk has been shown to be an equal substitute (with some arguing it's actually more beneficial) to protein shakes. Plus, it's cheaper than protein powders.

Every 8oz choc milk packs 8-11g of protein, with usually a 1:4 ratio of whey to casein protein. Whey is fast acting (you digest it faster and the amino acids get to your muscles quicker) while casein is digested slowly, giving you a steady stream of protein for your recovering muscles. Also, the sugar in the milk provides an insulin spike, which makes glucose rush into the muscles providing them with much needed energy to recover.

The main article is here, and the journal article is from the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. 16; 78-91.

I've switched to choc milk for my post-workout drink (from Myofusion's protein powder) and am noticing the same benefits. I think it's worth a try, and if you're a regular protein powder purhcaser - oh the alliteration! - you'll find it's awesome for your wallet too.

I'm new to the boards and I just have to say, you gals are awesome :)
