Calligraphy

So lately I've been considering doing the calligraphy on our invitations myself...I don't know how to do calligraphy, but I'm pretty good at copying things, so I'm thinking that if I have a guide/key with all the letters and numbers that it won't be too difficult.

Is anyone else doing this? Are you using calligraphy to address your invitations at all?

Re: Calligraphy

  • My Mom graciously offered to do them!! She has beautiful handwriting, and is a little rusty but I bought her some pens a few months ago to practice with.  I think it's super elegant but it's SO expensive to pay someone to do it.  At least, the 2 or so people I looked into.
  • I was thinking of doing the same thing. I took a caligraphy class in middle school and I really liked it, and was pretty good at it, but its been so long that I don't really remember how to do it. Also, it is much more time consuming, so I am just going to use my best handwriting.

  • I'm hiring someone - We decided to go with Danielle Gonzalez of Dani Writes Calligraphy; she actually lives right near my parents so we won't need to pay the shipping.

I would probably try it myself if our envelopes weren't metallic black; we for sure need a professional.

  • I am hiring someone.

  • We have a family friend that has offered to do ours.

But if I were to do them I would go the "print in really light gray on each envelope in a calligraphy font and trace" route.  I used to do calligraphy and that pen sure is finicky.

This is genius! I'm going to do this-- adding it to the list.

    Thanks!

  • I am hiring a printing company to print mine because me and everyone else I know has horrible handwriting and I had a hard enough time printing my STDs so I don't even want to deal with that again! My mom owns a business and uses a local printing company regularly so I hoping that he will give me a deal =)
  • I'm buying clear address labels and using a nice font for printing on those.  I did this for the save the dates and it looks nice.  Not as formal and nice looking as real calligraphy, but definitley better than my handwriting!

  • I was going to just print them myself on the envelopes. But I LOVE the idea of light gray printing and writing over it! I didnt see the point of paying for them. But thats just me!

  • I'm writing mine by myself, just need to purchase a nice pen. I think you'll do a great job if you write it out in pencil first, then copy over it like PP said.

  • We will not be doing calligraphy beacuse we both decided it's a waste of money/energy. We got a wedding invitation last year with calligraphy on it and we said "hmm, that's nice" and then tossed the envelope in the trash! No one besides the moms will be saving your invitations... every other guest will throw them away. I guess my attitude is, if people aren't going to appreciate it, I'm not going to spend my money.

I like this idea. I have pretty awful handwriting but don't want to pay for someone to do it, either. It's just an envelope!
