Getting in Shape

Raspberry Ketone

Does or Has anyone taken it? It seems to be everywhere and I just saw a clip from the Dr. Oz show and it seems  pretty awesome. Of course its not magic i would of course pair it with diet and exercise but it seems like it would sure help!

Re: Raspberry Ketone

  • Diet and exercise work together just fine. You don't need to add anything else in, except maybe a multi-vitamin.

This. As long as you are on a balanced diet and exercising you shouldn't need anything else. Raspberry ketone is a fad.

</div><div>This.  It seems like every other day they do another show on weight loss and reveal some magical supplement that is going to help you lose weight.  He tells you to take absurdly high amounts of said supplements and never, ever tells listeners what possibly side effects may be of taking that supplement.  Just because something is "natural" or a supplement does NOT mean it is safe, and "more is better" does not apply.</div><div>
</div><div>I'd love to see the research behind the stuff he puts on that show.  I'm sure if we examined the studies that he uses, the sample groups are like 15 males in Russia... ie does not translate into the mass population and the sample size wasn't even big enough to indicate anything.</div><div>
</div><div>Ugh, sorry, Dr. Oz upsets me greatly. LOL

  • It was recommended to me by a friend, and the gal at the vitamin store which is what started my research into it and i guess just seeing it was on dr. oz made me feel a little more at ease about trying it. The gal at the store said it is an all natual thing and you could get the same thing from actually eating raspberries, but the thing is you would have to eat like 100+ pounds per day to equal one pill. So  it seeems to make sense  and be legit i was just looking for someone who has taken it. My friend takes it and swear by it, and she had done terrific at weight loss, but our body types are nothing similar then or now.

As far as just doing Diet and Exercise, this does not work for me. I was told several years ago by my dr to take something when im seriously concentraing on losing weight. She said never expect a magic pill to do it all while you sit on the couch eating chips, and never rely on just diet and exercise taking something along with the diet and excerise is just simply giving the diet and exercise a swift kick to get going. Ever since then i've followed this and noticed how true it is.
I can exercise and eat healthy and lose some weight but everytime i add in something to help, it does just that, it helps!

  • So... your doctor told you that the thing that has been working for years to keep people HEALTHY won't work for you? Did he/she specifically say, "hey, eat an asston of raspberies" ?
When has overdoing a particular food EVER done good for someone? Over-eating anything makes your liver and kidneys work extra hard.

What kind of "weight" are we talking? Because I will NEVER be a skinny chick. I'm just not. It's not in my body make up. I bust my butt at the gym and eat incredibly well, and I will never be skinny. Know what your body build is and accept it as part of what is you and beautiful.
If you ARE overweight and your doctor says you can't lose unless you "take something"  that says two things to me. Either
    1. He/she is a crap doctor and you need to find a new one or go to a new one. (you said this person told you "years ago" maybe it's time for an updated physical)
    2. That you might have some sort of thyroid issue, in which case this might be true, but the dr. should be the one perscribing, not Dr. Oz and your friend.

Your friend and the gal at the vitamin store are not doctors, do not know your history, have not done your bloodwork. Nor are they nutrionists.
This board will ALWAYS promote the all-natural way to do anything. Anything more than that, you need to see a dr. You don't know what kind of damage you could do to your body down the road from eating 90lbs of "raspberries" a day. (quoted because you're ASSUMING based on what this tv host and the interwebs claims it is, not because you are actually eating the fruit so are fully aware that that's ALL that's in this)
  • Yeah, I wouldn't buy that just because something is natural that it's good for you. Like... this is far fetched, but poison ivy is a naturally occurring thing. Eating that would be harmful - just because it's natural doesn't mean it's okay. There are lots of things in nature that we are not intended to eat - like 100+ pounds of raspberries a day.

I would go see a different Dr and go to a nutritionist - I don't know any Dr's that would say you for sure need to take a supplement instead of just eating sensibly and exercising.

I don't mean to rain on your parade or anything or dash your hopes about raspberry ketones, but I truly believe that you could lose weight without them. It's just hard work, that's all. We're a society that needs immediate gratification - and weight loss isn't something you can make happen immediately. I wish you only the best of luck in your weight loss journey!

  • I'm sorry, but if my doctor told me the only way for me to lose weight was to take a diet pill, I'd be finding a new doctor before I even left the building.

If diet and exercise TRULY don't work for you, you need to be getting medical tests done to find out why.  Diet and exercise don't just "not work" for people unless there is an underlying medical issue.

I also think doctors that recommend weight loss pills should be shot on sight...or at least lose their medical licenses.  What the heck happened to "do no harm"?

  • It was probably about 7 or 8 years ago, I had really been focused on weight loss, eating the right food, right amount of calorie intake, exercising daily, some times twice and day and had been doing this for  a little over a month, went to my ob and they weighted me while i was there and i had gained 6 pounds since my last visit 3 months prior. Needless to say I was more then disapointed. So I went in for a check up and physical with my primary care dr and explained the situation, they checked me throid, which growing up my mom swore i had throid issues because i never ate enough to gain the weight i was gaining, but everytime, this time included the test came back fine. They did some other tests, blood work and what else i don't remember and everything came back fine(of course!). So my dr suggested i something to assist with the weight loss. again im not expecting a miracle drug, or something i can take and wake up a size 2 tomorrow, and i don't remember what i took back then but i helped. i still stuck to my healthy eating, working out, cutting out sodas etc but for some reason my body needed that jump start or something. 2 other times in the past years i've dieted and ran into similar issues, all 3 times i've taken something differnt and it has always helped, the problem is, there is something new out on the market about every 20 seconds so when i go looking in the vitamin stores, its more then just a little over whelming and i'm just not comfortable taking something just on the advice of the person working the vitamin store so i just thought i might find someone on here who is a step ahead of me and might have some suggestions!!
  • Raspberry ketons are not safe or regulated by the FDA.   As a pharmacist I would NEVER take anything recommended by Dr. OZ.  Just look at his face.  I couldn't trust someone with that much plastic surgery.
  • "Natural" does not equal "safe."  Vitamins are natural but in very high doses are not safe -- they are toxic.  Tobacco is natural. Opium is natural.  And from what I know, "natural" is not a term regulated by the FDA.  Anyone can put "natural" on a supplement or box of food but "natural" is not a defined term that has legitimacy in the realm of food and drug.
