Wedding Invitations & Paper

DVD invitations

Hi all-
We're doing something different- not for everyone, but then again, we're a different sort of couple. The invitation will include a DVD. No, it's not cheesy photos or a film of us, but it ties into other aspects. Whatever, the offbeat idea isn't the point.
The point is, the company we found- and I do like them and their prices otherwise- doesn't provide a full on proof. Just a PDF. Like to where I said "Well, theoretically, how much would one be?" and they were just like they don't do it. I'm reading consistently to always get a proof of your invitation first. Yet might this type of invite be an exception? FI is a musician and says even for his CD covers he didn't get a full proof because the cost lies in setting up the printer, etc., not the goods themselves. Then I got to wondering, isn't that the same deal with a straight-up paper type thing?
Is the whole "get a full proof and if they won't provide one, run don't walk" sentiment legit and it's really a deal, or is that just wedding industry talk? Sometimes it's difficult to discern when wedding sites are giving good pointers and when it's just- I don't know- over the top. Any reason a PDF wouldn't suffice? Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone didn't get a full proof and lived to tell/has any disaster or success stories on this- and we can just drop the issue- or if we should give up on this company and invest the time in continuing to email other companies. Thanks.

Sorry but DVD invites are very self indulgent and AWish. Although you think it's a great idea, no one besides you and maybe your moms are going to watch it. Save your money.

  • First, I agree with HobokenBride, I would skip them and just do normal invitations.

Second, what can you tell about a DVD from a pdf? Doesn't the DVD have moving stuff, etc.? I would skip it entirely, and if that's not an option, find a different company.

Spotlight dances are more AW than this. We're doing it, and we don't even appear in the video, so it's not a traditional bit and what people think of when they think of these, with the "look at what an attractive twosome we are". You'd have to know more about the content to make a judgement call. But anyway, I didn't get into that, because as previously stated, it wasn't the point of the post.

PDF is the layout of the inserts- like, here's the cover, here's the inside jacket, etc. The DVD itself is blank- we handle that and burn the video. Anyway, it sounds like you're saying that for whatever reason, it really is important to see the physical object. I guess I'll keep shopping around to see if anyone else presses a single copy.

So what you're really saying is you're just looking for validation of a bad idea. Sorry but this is not the place for you then.

Incorrect. I'm aware of that rote response, but no, I don't need validation for the idea from the board. I already checked in with my own crowd on the "should I", who will ultimately be the ones to see the invites. And no, they don't hold back their true feelings from us, so the argument that they will secretly totally think what you think doesn't hold water. They also have more information on the nature of the idea, so they are better able to form an informed opinion (which again, I didn't need to provide here, as I already have feedback on the "should I").
What they couldn't tell me was re: standard practice on proofing (see inquiry above) specific to this situation. I thought perhaps someone here would know.
  • I would want to see the whole product, as it will be sent out to guests before investing money in it.

  • It's kind of like when you do a t-shirt order or something on those lines, they will not send you just one as a proof, but they will send you a pdf of the artwork for you to approve, so I am assuming its similar, since yes your FI is correct, the cost to make just one will be pretty expensive (and unless you want to pay that set-up fee twice) you should either just have something in the contract that if there are faults with the final product they will fix it on warranty so you can be assured you will get the proper product.  Otherwise, will not hurt to at least shop around and see if someone will do the proof a different way, but on some level I would think there would be a fee with the set-up since something like that would take a lot of time to put together.
