Tented Evening Wedding Reception in the Mountains...

Hi everyone,
I am in the very beginning of the wedding planning process and was hoping to get some opinions on one very important factor in our wedding scheme - the weather!

My fiance and I are planning on getting married at his aunt and uncle's farm in Lawton, Pennsylvania, which is located in the Endless mountains.  Our wedding date is Sept. 10th, and we are planning on having an outdoor ceremony at 4PM followed by cocktail hour by the pond and a tented reception on the same grounds.  It is exactly the wedding I have always wanted, but my concern is the weather.  I have done some research on the weather in the area, and in general, for September, the high is around 70-75F and the low is 54-49F.   I am very concerned that lows in the 50s may be too chilly for an outdoor evening reception that we plan on ending around midnight...

I don't know if I should change the date of the wedding to August, when it is slightly warmer at night (around 56-58F), but my fi and I both love the fall, and we would like to ideally stick with early September if possible...

We plan on having sides on the tent that can be dropped to keep the chill and wind out, and I know we can get heaters for the tent and patio heaters for the cocktail lounge, and I plan to have shawls on hand for the women....

My question is: is 50F too cold for an outdoor tented reception?  Has anyone been to any tented outdoor evening receptions where it was chilly, and could you please share your opinions on this?  I would be soooo grateful, as this is driving me crazy and it is a huge hurdle that I cannot seem to get over so that I can start planning the rest of our wedding details...

thanks!!!!

  • Welcome!

It's my experience that everyone you invite to the wedding will check the weather before they come and dress accordingly. Don't sweat it so much. Plan the wedding you want.

    Good luck.
  • If most of your guests are from the area, they know the weather.  We are having an outdoor wedding in November in Savannah.  It could be 80 or it could be 50.  FI the ever prepared boyscout is bringing a few wraps and sweaters incase but people will dress appropriately.  I have thought about posting the weather forecast on our web page.  We did not want a traditional web page so we set up a facebook fan page and can post updates that will go out to everyone on our fan list.  If it looks like a front is going to come in and cool it off, we can post a weather update before the wedding.  I think a tent wedding, with all the people, dancing, talking and moving around will heat itself.  The cooler temperatures may actually be appreciated.

I was at a wedding with a tented reception and I think I would rather be a little chilly than being too hot.

It was terrible... there was rain and it was humid so the grass/ground inside the tent was soggy, the dance floor was soaking wet, the DJ has problems with set up, there were bugs EVERYWHERE. I lost my appetite and we let early.

No matter what you do, ALWAYS have a back up plan.  Whether it is too hot or too cold, you need a plan B just in case.  That said, you can always provide a basket of pashmina's for the ladies.  The guys have their suit jackets.

  • I'm getting married in October and it's pretty much the same weather.

Advise people on your website to dress in layers. People from that area know what's up.

Also, rent a heater. Our company wouldn't even rent us a tent with out one. Then you won't have to worry and it won't be an issue.
