Hawaii - seriously where to stay??!!

Okay ladies, I know there have been many posts regarding Hawaii and activities, hotels, etc  but I need to just put this out there  - we are planning on 10 days - 2 wks on Maui and possibly Kauai...we are looking forward to relaxing, enjoying the beaches, a little exploring and a drink or two?

Where should we stay? i've looked up hotels on tripadvisor but i would like to hear from you guys too...

and is there anything that we we absolutely HAVE to do?

TIA - i just figured out what that meant the other day! lol

  • We stayed at the Ritz Carlton on Maui and we loved it.  My favorite thing we did that was Maui-related was the Road to Hana.  We also got a couples massage at our hotel which doesn't have anything to do with Maui but it was wonderful.
  • Based on recs of others (I haven't been), I suggest looking into the Marriot Kauai Beach Club and the Westin Maui Resort & Spa.

  • We're staying in a condo on Maui.  It's cheaper, right on the beach, and has a ton of space.

  • If you're looking for something quaint, secluded, and at a reasonable price in Maui, Napili Village has some nice condos in Napili Bay (just north of Lahaina). I stayed there in 2008, and it was wonderful! The beach is beautiful, not too crowded, and you can see it from your condo. It's also nice to be able to stop at the grocery store and pick up some basics so you can cook in the condo and don't have to eat out for every meal.

We made spaghetti one night and took it to the beach to have a nice sunset dinner. :)

  • from what I've read (i'm also planning my hawaiian honeymoon) the best place to stay with the most beautiful beaches and best local attractions are the big hotels on Kaanapali. It's close to Lanihana and lots of excursions go out from there.

The major hotels there are the Hyatt, Sheraton, Ritz Carlton, and Westin, aBeach Club.

As for Kauai - we're staying at the marriott Kauai Resort because we have lots of Marriott points to use :-)

We also stayed in Maui at the Ritz Carlton. We had an amazing suite. It was such a beautiful hotel. A few things we did that we loved were the helicopter ride, hiking to the waterfalls, massages, scuba diving and a private dinner on the beach.. We also rented a convertible, and drove around the island. Maui is gorgeous!

We stayed at The Grand Wailea on Maui. It was amazing & they treat you so so well if they know it's a special occasion. FI proposed to me while we were there and they upgraded our room when we checked in to a lovely suite. At the time I thought they were just being nice and upgrading us for no reason :-)
The water slides at the hotel were a ton of fun too! We thought they would be kid water slides but they ended up being a blast!

  • We're going to Hawaii and were looking for the same things you are.  We did a lot of research on hotels.  We're splurging a little and staying at the Four Seasons in Maui and the Grand Hyatt on Kauai.

  • It really depends on how much you want to spend, what you want to be around (nightlife? quiet nights?), what part of the island you want to stay on, and what kind of room you want. We wanted a room that had a kitchen in it so we could cook some meals ourselves, as eating out for every meal in Maui gets expensive quick! There are condos that we were really leaning towards, but each one is individually owned and I read too many horror stories about people getting a crappy room w/ no working toilet even though the picture and bio said differently. We decided we want to stay at a resort so if there are issues, we will be taken care of. After lots and lots of research, we decided on the Sheraton. The Westin looked good, but didn't have a kitchen. I've heard it's nice to walk up and down the beach there and the nightlife isn't too far away, and Sheraton has a free shuttle there and back. There were a few others that looked great, but were quite a bit more expensive and didn't offer much more than fancier pools and landscaping.
  • We stayed at the Royal Lahaina on Maui...it was okay, but if we were going back for our HM, I would probably splurge on something a little nicer.  Although the location was great, it was right next to black rock which has excellent snorkeling.

My favorite thing that we did in Maui was the Feast at Lele luau.  It's a little pricey, but is served family style at private tables (vs buffet style and 100 person picnic tables like traditional luaus) and includes an open bar.  When you book, you can tell them it's your HM and that you want to be seated in the front, they are pretty good about accomodating you.

  • We went last year to both islands for our HM

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Kauai ---- I'm trying to figure out how we can get back there...my hubs said it was one of the best hotels he has ever stayed at, location and service were great!

In Maui we stayed at the Sheraton --- located at the far end of the main beach in Kaanapali --- a much more crowded area by Hawaiian standars but lots of restaurant options within walking distance

    GL in your planning!

  • We stayed at the Westin Villas on Maui because we wanted a kitchenette.  I wasn't a fan.  For a hm, I'd look into the Hyatt in Kaanapali, the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua or the Fairmont Kea Lani or Four Seasons in Wailea.

We just returned from Kauai on Saturday and, like many pps, stayed at the Grand Hyatt.  It was FABULOUS - the grounds and the pools alone make this place worth it.  If you're looking to stay on the North Shore, I'd look into the St. Regis and if you want a super small boutique resort, look at the Koa Kea.

  • Maui was our first choice for a honeymoon destination...but with buying a house and a new car we are having to put Maui on hold and go somewhere closer to home.  Anywho... when I was doing research I found an adorable two bedroom home in Lahaina that overlooked the ocean and was about half the price of a hotel.  We had wanted to be completely free to do whatever we wanted and we didn't feel the need to have to pay more for a hotel room (that is small) and then additional money for resort fees when we weren't even planning on staying at the resort that much or using half of the amenities.  It really all comes down to what your budget is and what you want to do while in Maui as to where you should stay.

  • Looks like you have some ideas for Hawaii, WHICH website to book your vacation with?  it looks like some of the airfares are cheaper with hotel together.  Which one has anybody used?
  • Hey!

We just booked our honeymoon to HI!! and we are super excited... we are spening 4 nights at the Marriott in the big island and then 6 nights a the Westin in Maui. Both of these hotels have beaches you can go on. I know alot of the hotels there isn't an actual beach to walk out on and you have to drive to a beach.  It is very rocky I guess... Hope you have fun!!!
  • Who did you use to book your flight, room, etc?
