Weight Watchers vs. a Nutritionist... which would you choose?

I am 25, 5'7.. now at 168 lbs, and a size 10. Ideally I would like to get to 140-145, meaning I need to lose about 25 lbs. Based on my frame and size, do you think it is possible to lose this amount of weight in 5 months? Also, I'm trying to decide if I should join weight watchers or go to a nutritionist (since I have health insurance). I wonder if one would be more beneficial than the other...

Please share your thoughts- I really appreciate it!

To lose 25 pounds in 5 months, is only 5 lbs per month (~1 lb per week), which totally doable!  I voted for the nutritionist because they can give you the same dieting advice and tools as weight watches but would save you the money if insurance will cover it (I made the same choice).  You can always sign up for free calorie counting websites to help you track what you eat, like WW has.

My only other thought (and not an option in your poll):  look into affordable personal trainers.  Even if just for the first couple weeks of working out because then you get good advice on the types of work outs that will best help you reach your goal!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be able to get there!

RMcDougle- thank you! I think the personal trainer is a great idea and I was actually looking into that, since I really think it will be great to give me a jump start. Also, I agree about saving money w/the nutritionist. I believe my copay is $20 per visit and if I am going 1-2 times per month, thats about the same price as WW. How many times per month did you meet w/your nutritionist and did you see results?

Weight Watchers is less thank half what you just said it was.  I'm on weight watchers and it's $17.99 a month after the sign up...my inital 3 months were like $54 or something...so if money is an issue -- there's that fact.  I lose about 1-2 lbs a week on WW...depends on if I'm "good"

edit: $54 total -- not per month

Are you doing online only or do you also attend meetings? I was considrting the meetings and thats where I saw it was like $40 a month.

I would recommend a dietitian wholeheartedly before WW.

I've never seen a nutritionist, but when I succeeded in losing weight for the first time (like you, I was trying to lose a relatively small amount of weight), Weight Watchers worked very well for me.  I just did the online program and I had no problems sticking to it.  Everyone's different, but I don't exactly have the best self control and the online program was enough.  I kept it off for quite a while (eventually gained some back through eating completely irresponsibly - my own fault).   I'm planning on going back on WW soon, since my wedding's in 6 mos.  Sooo I'd suggest trying out whatever's less expensive for you, I think they'd both be effective.

I recommend doing something like myfitnesspal. It's free and I have had really good luck so far. It's essentially the same as weight watchers, counting calories but not using points. I went down a size about 6 weeks or so. So I'm losing about a pound a week. I have also been going to the gym. Myfitness pal calculates calories from exercise as well as food. I really like the recipe feature it has too - makes it really easy for me to figure out portions.

deanozzi- thats awesome to hear and very motivating! How long are each of your workouts and do you usually keep it consistent? (i.e. cardio + weights every. day, alternate, etc)

I recommend weight watchers because I know it works, but I've also tried many other things that work for other people but not me (a nutritionist, sparkpeople, etc). I'd suggest trying to see if you can keep yourself motivated first, then after a month if you don't see results, trying a nutritionist, then moving on to weight watchers.

If you go the nutritionist, I would go for a registered dietician instead.  Nutritionists are hit or miss, and RDs have a lot more training, certification, and licensing.

I do it online -- my mom does the meetings -- I still feel like the $40 is WAY high....but I never even looked into the meetings because online is perfect for me!
