French Polynesia Island Ideas

We are already planning on Moorea and Bora Bora, but were trying to figure out which of the more remote islands we should go to. I originaly wanted to go to the Marquesas, but its another 5 hours flight, so I dont think we will make it.

We were possible thinking of Tikahau, Mataiva, Fakarava, or Maupeti. Any suggestions? If you went, where did you stay?

  • There is a post like 3-4 down from here talking about that region. You should check it out. Lots of helpful information!

What do you want to do while you are there? the Tuamtous are nothing like the Marquesas, so the experience there would not be the same. I personally love Tikehau- Maupiti and Mataiva do not have regular flights nor do they have resort style accommodations. Mataiva even less so than Maupiti (don't know of anything at all in Mataiva, honestly). But, maybe that is not what you are looking for? I think Maupiti is more much acessible, IMHO, but again you won't get the level of accommodations that you'll get in Bora Bora or Moorea. Fakarava is one of the other tourist-friendly islands that I have not been to, but it's part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and the White Sand Beach Resort is the only resort there among other smaller pensions. You won't run into any crowds there. If you really wanted to do something different, you could also check out Raivavae in the Australs. Again, no resorts, but very untouched by tourism. If money is no object, then check out Archipels Cruises. They do an itinerary that takes you up through the Tuamotus to the untouched and inaccessible islands. As does Aranui, but it's a working vessel. Knowing your budget would also be helpful. Budget plays a HUGE roll into what I would recommend to anyone.

Also, FYI- you are not going to find anyone on here that has been anywhere other than Tahiti, Moorea, or Bora Bora. Maybe Taha'a or Huahine, but even less likely. Your best bet for info is on the Tahiti-explorer.com chat boards. They are true Tahiti travel pros over there.
