Why do we get two garters?

I have been shopping online for a garter... Now every one that I have come across has two garters... both of different sizes. Why is that? Are we supposed to wear both? One? what's the deal?

Thanks

Re: Why do we get two garters?

  • One is meant for tossing, and the other for a keepsake.

Personally I don't get why I'd want to keep one. So I bought a single garter instead of a set.
  • Yep, one to toss and one to keep.

I actually had a really funny one custom made from a girl on etsy that's an inside joke with FI, probably the only reason I want to keep it.
  • I was always of the understanding that your DH keeps the garter, not you.  Least everyone I know who has been married has given theirs to hubby as a momento.

One to keep, one to toss, same as bouquets if you are planning on doing that.

  • I kept one, but only because the garter I liked was a cute set.  And it was half-off at Hobby Lobby.  It's going in my scrapbook.  I wouldn't care if I did / didn't have an extra.
  • We did 2 and H left the keep one in his tux jacket when he returned it,so it was pointless.  And I really didn't want the person who caught the garter to get something that probably was stinky and smelly under a long dress in the middle of summer.

  • One is to keep and one is to throw.  If you don't care for a keepsake, buy a single or throw the keeper.  My garter comes as a set of two, but I actually like the tosser better than the keeper :)

  • Which one is which??? Do we keep the big one and toss to smaller one? Or is it personal Choice?
  • You normally keep the big one and toss the small one.  But if you like the smaller one then keep that one.

  • First of all, the original purpose of garters was to hold stockings up. So 2 legs=2 garters. What that ended up translating into for weddings is 1 to throw, 1 to keep. They come in 2 sizes to allow women to wear whichever fits best rather than being a 1-size-fits-all kind of thing, though I hear that larger sizes do have trouble finding properly sized garters.
