Eternity rings!

Hello Ladies,

Were ring shopping & I want eternity bands (for myself, not him of course).
Kinda like this with my center stone set in 1 of them.

When we went into the jeweler he tried to talk us out of them!!! He says what if I gain / lose weight, they get banged up on the under side, get damaged, hard to repair....... Hubby fell for it!!! Frown
Correct me if I'm wrong but arnt these rings going on MY finger???
Please give me your opinions on this. I've ALWAYS wanted eternity rings & dont think I'd be happy with anything else. What is a bride to do???

Re: Eternity rings!

  • I worked at a jewelry store for a year and a half. Get what you want, but the guy is right. The diamonds on that will be on the underside of your hand will get beat up. Also if you do gain or lose weight they are hard to resize. If you get them, for sure get a service plan. And always, always, ALWAYS get your nice jewelry appraised and insured because if you lose them, the store will not replace them. Insurance will cover them, BUT for a bridal set, a general home owners or rental policy only covers about $1,500-2,000 total in jewelry. If your rings are worth more than that, get a separate policy on them.

  • I liked those too, but for the reasons you mentioned (and less cost), I just got a band that has diamonds half way around.  No problems with sizing, damage, etc.  And, no one can tell that they're not ALL the way around the ring.  Good luck.

  • I am on the eternity ring bandwagon.

I love them, I want one.

That said, I don't think I would have it as my every day band.  I would get something a little bit more durable and hardy, because you DO put some wear and tear on your rings.  But that doesn't mean I wouldn't wear it for going out or any time I wasn't just doing day-to-day stuff.
  • Definately get if if you have your heart set on it but it looks like the above advice is along the same lines as your jewelers.
  • Thanks so much for all your advice.
I've put years of thought into this & I'm going to take my chances and get them. If its gotta be on my finger every single day I may as well totally love it right?

    This is true!

I don't want an eternity band, but I want a ring with a design all the way around.  They can't be sized so I'm trying to get one that only has the design most of the way around.  This way you'd never seen the plain part, but it can definitely be resized.  I consider it my compromise.
  • Go for it!!  If it's a good quality ring, especially set in platinum, the diamonds on the underside will be securely in place.  If you are concerned about the weight loss/gain, you could always err on the side of caution and have the bands sized slightly larger (not fall off your finger, just not snug) and have a guard placed inside to keep it in place.  That way, if you gain weight, fingers swell when pregnant, etc. you can remove the guard and the ring will still fit!

Seriously, get what you want.  Against my better judgement I got a half eternity wedding band and its driving me bonkers.  It spins around exposing just the metal part all the freaking time (and no, its not too big for my finger).  As soon as we can justify the expense (one year anniversary?), I'll be upgrading to a full eternity.  So I guess my advice is to get what you want and will be happy with now.

  • I have a semi-eternity with a trio of larger stones in the middle. I thank my lucky stars everyday when I do something stupid that the bottom is gold. But if you feel comfortable then go for it! Its yours to wear for a lifetime, you should love it.
  • My only concern is the rubbing of the diamonds on the two fingers next to your ring finger, my mom has calusses from hers. So be careful!!!
  • I got engaged 3 weeks ago, and my engagement ring is an eternity band. A little unconventional for the engagement ring, but I am a nursing student and have a lifetime of putting on gloves and washing my hands ahead of me. my fiance chose an eternity ring so that i could wear it everyday and not worry about a big rock sticking out of it and ripping my gloves open.

yes, there are diamonds all around, but diamonds are strong. i don't think they will get that "beat up" and if the band is thin, it sort of "pockets" into the crease when you hold things, so it's not really coming into major contact with anything.

Also, regarding sizing: yes, they are hard to size. mine was custom made, but needed to be made a quarter size smaller. instead of re-doing it, the jeweler added two little white gold "bumps" inside... like prongs. when i saw it i thought - "that looks so painful!" but low and behold, i can't even feel them, and now my ring fits perfectly!

i love my eternity band. we're picking out another ring with a bigger stone for non-working hours, but this one is what i will wear everyday for the rest of my life. it's perfect for me, and the fact that he took my job into consideration makes it even sweeter!

so... long post short... i'm for the eternity band! :)
  • also, if you have the diamonds micro-set into the gold, they don't poke out or have prongs that bother your other fingers! :)
