the fruit police! or, my FI's picky tastes

My FI and spent some time today going over our venue's menu options and picking selections for the tasting. He's a rather picky eater, which I've gotten used to over the time we've known each other, but it really came to the forefront during this process because the menu featured items with complex lists of ingredients. He automatically said no to anything that had even a hint of fruit in it, no matter how delicious it sounded otherwise. He even red-lighted a goat cheese appetizer, though goat cheese is his favorite, because it came with a raspberry vinagrette. He almost did the same to a molten chocolate cake that was topped with berries. Which is when I turned to him and blurted, "Well, aren't you being the fruit police today!"

I think I offended him at first, and then he laughed. He admits to having an extreme dislike to anything with fruit flavoring. The only fruits he actually likes are oranges and clementines - he avoids everything else. I'm not on a mission to convert him into being a fruit connoisseur, but it'd be nice if he could tolerate a little more variety - especially when we're eating out and a lovely, sophisticated place offers a menu item with fruit garnish or dressing, sauce or gravy with a hint of a fruit flavor.

He used to have an equal dislike of all vegetables, and I'm slowly chipping away at that - he used to stare at side salads like they were crawling piles of bugs on the plate, and now he's even ordered salad a few times instead of the soup option. So there's that.

What food items are you avoiding on your menu? Which of you is pickier?

Well, we're not having meat, because I don't eat it and we are going for kosher-style.  (We'll have fish, though.)

I'm not that picky once you get passed the vegetarian thing, the only thing I refuse to put in my mouth is olives, and I'll eat things I don't particularly like (like eggplant) if that's my only option.  My FI doesn't like strongly-flavored greens, which I really like.  Whenever I get broccoli rabe, which he likes better than kale, he will say things like, "that sounds ok, but regular broccoil is good, too."  He also doesn't like lentils because of their texture, which is hard sometimes.

Keep in mind that he doesn't have to like everything that you serve.  As long as there's enough for him to eat that he won't be hungry and won't look really ridiculous (i.e. a plate full of mashed potatoes), serve things that you like, too.

We are going to have a coctail reception, so we are having a variety of food to suit both our tastes. I am the pickier one by far means. I dont eat mushrooms, which he loves. most cheeses, seafood, pickled things, and alot more things. We decided to have some things I like and some things he does. The one thing I refuse to have on out menu though is blue cheese, I hate the taste and smell and would refuse to kiss hubby if he ate any and that would be bad on our wedding day lol :P

As long as there is some things that he will eat, and enough to keep him satisfied than I think you can have some things with fruit. Also would it be possible for the venue to set a few of those options aside and serve him without the fruit part. ex the goatcheese appy with no vinigrette.

I'm much pickier than my FI.  He eats everything!  We're serving an option of a beef, chicken (for me) or a vegetarian meal.

I'm not picky at all. I'll try anything once and generally like most things (assuming they are done well, of course). FI didn't really care about the menu so he let me go nuts.

I'm the picky one, but it hasn't been too hard to agree on our menu.

I am also the picky one, but we are having brunch food and I love waffles, muffins, eggs, bacon, etc.

I'm the picky one for sure! FI eats just about anything. It wasn't too hard deciding on our menu though!

We are both very adventurous eaters, so during our selection nothing had to be avoided. We were more concerned about pleasing a couple of picky eaters in our immediate family. It sucks that he won't venture out a little more, but your marriage will be filled with compromise, so this is a good start! haha

    Fruit police is right!

I would say FI is pickier, though his tastes seem to change with the seasons.

Sometimes he loathes peas, but i'll see him eat them every now and again. Sometimes it's broccoli, it just changes.

I am an adeventerous foodie, as long as it doesn't look/smell disgusting, i'll give it a try.
