Last minute budget crisis: How important is video?

Getting married in three weeks, and, due to a miscalculation from the beginning, I have discovered that we are $2000 over budget.

My fiance has agreed to foot $1000 of that.  Cutting the videographer ($1000) would be a way to make up the other $1000.  My parents have now offered to pay for the video as their wedding present (they are paying for most of the wedding as it is).  What they were going to give us was a hotel package at the beautiful North Shore resort where we got engaged.  We really enjoyed our time there, and have not been able to go back since.

My fiance's opinion is that we have already spent more than we intended on the wedding, and that the video would be for me, and a weekend at the resort is for "us."  So he favors the resort.

I am torn on what to do.  On one hand, I feel we've got one shot to do the video, whereas the hotel only costs money, which we can always save to go back to the resort.  And, oh, the videos of the first looks...so beautiful.  On the other hand, does anyone really ever watch their videos?  Is it worth it?  And I have to admit, having someone film my every move for a day creeps me out a bit.

I would love to hear your opinion, whether or not you are using video, and if you did, was it worth it?

I am so thankful I had video at my wedding. The ceremony went by so fast, and I'm really glad that I'm able to watch it again on video! Also, my photog missed our first kiss, and we will be able to get a still shot off our video, so I'm extra grateful for that! I know some people don't find it to be that important, but for me, I would have really regretted it had I not gotten video of at least the ceremony.

We used Brady from Highlights video. He has a few different packages that you could probably fit into your budget. I wouldn't have been able to spend $2000 on video, so I shopped around until I found someone in my budget. I would check around and see if you can find someone more in your price range.

I don't regret not having video. A handful of pictures and the overall memories of a really wonderful day and a little journaling has been enough. For me, I'd spend moola on travel to create more awesome experiences.

I asked my cousin to film the ceremony for me.  Obviously, I can't really give a review on that since my wedding is in three weeks as well!  I figured a video would be nice to have, but I didn't really want to spend the money to have it professionally done.  Is that a compromise you could do?

We had a friend record the ceremony and our dances/toasts at the reception.  I'm so glad that we did.  I had never intended to hire anyone and didn't ask anyone at the wedding.  Luckily, my MIL asked a friend to tape it for us.   I agree with a PP that the ceremony went by so fast that I'm glad I have a way to go back and remember it more vividly.  I watched it once this year around our anniversary.

We are not budgeting towards the video.  Our photographer was the most important expense, and we are just not the types to sit and watch that video in the future.  I know the photos will carry our most significant memories and that is just what we both decided to do.   I can't speak for you, but the additional memories you create at the resort might be worth cutting the video - as long as you can live with not watching yourselves in the moment again.  But a picture is worth 1000 words!  :)

I was originally going to have one, but ours wasn't able to work our new date when we had to change our wedding date. She graciously refunded our deposit :-)

I'm one to invest more in photography, for example. You won't watch your video every day, at most probably once a year. With pictures, there are ones you'll for sure get printed and framed that you'll have in your house and see every day whereas a video will sit in a box or on a shelf.

We didn't hire a videographer. I wish we would have had someone record the ceremony (even if it was just a friend with a camcorder) but I wouldn't have paid someone to be there during the reception, honestly. Our wedding was small enough that we were able to spend time with everyone during the reception, so I don't really feel like I missed anything there.

I was thinking along these same lines....do you know anybody with a nice video camera who could record it for you for free? It is a compromise.

I also think it is a personal preference. We didn't get video because we didn't imagine we would watch it enough to make it worth it. But not everybody feels this way, I know of some couples who are really glad they have video. We had nice pictures and I spent a lot of time putting them into a nice digital album, and that is where we go when we want to remember our wedding. I don't miss having a video, but that's just me.
