Serve yourself bar???

I am having my wedding at my family’s house in Hayward WI. It will be outdoors and semi formal/semi casual. We are trying to cut costs so I don't really want to hire a bartender. Would it be in bad taste to have a serve yourself bar?

Bad taste is relative.  If you want a wedding that is more like a picnic then you're probably fine. If you have more than 100 guests and your offering anything besides beer then you're setting yourself up for a bunch of irritated guests.   You may want to save money on buying all the booze, but hiring a couple people to serve and take care of your guests properly.

I agree with the above post, you can do whatever you want but just be aware that a "serve yourself" bar will be considered very casual. I think it could also be a mess, but I guess it depends on the amount of space you have available.

    again, i think it depends....

do you have a bunch of young drunky friends, who will overserve themselves too quickly in the night (where a bar tender pours more "regular" drinks)?  i ask, because 10 years ago, I would have been that friend... and would have been passed out by 9 (but others would have been way too rowdy)

plus, if you have a hired bartender, someone else is liable in a drinking/driving thing, rather than the host of the party....

but... if you have responsible guests.... it may be a whole different ball game!

    just things to think of

Have any college friends or relatives? Try asking a relative or freind thats in college to have a friend play bartender. With conections you should be able to find a decent bartender that way, adn they might do it for just tips or a small pay

Thank you so much for your help. It works out that the catering company that I am going with has a bartender that I can rent for $15/hour. I am thrilled, that is one less thing that I have to worry about.
