Awesome photographer? too good to be true?

Ok, so I got ahold of my friends photographer Mariangel Mendez, she took their engagement pictures and I loved them, my friends told me she's very creative and awesome and she charges $550 for wedding pictures and I think like $475 for engagement, this is her portfolio, what do you guys think?

    I'm not personally a fan of the work in the flikr site..

    Does she have a regular website? 
    I also find it strange that the pricing is almost the same for both wedding and engagement photos when they involve completely different coverage and timeframes...

    Are you still looking for a photographer? Are you looking for the $1,000 price range?

    I dont know if she has a website
    but I do know she is reliable, she knows FI and we have various friends in common, I think she is just getting started and thats why those are her prices, but what do you think of the pictures?

    Personally, I dont like them.. The photos seemed very over processed to me. I also noticed some of the photos were completely blurry.. (I was looking at the one wedding album I saw.. the Bettancourt wedding) Maybe Im just being nit-picky.. I guess for me, I want a very clean/classic/ simple look... well taken, composed, not too busy, good lighting, and sharp.. (obviously stuff at the wedding you cant help with certain aspects as far as being busy.. but in portraits, you can) 

    Also, as for the $475 for Engagement pics.. I think that is high! I know one of the photographesr I am looking at only charges $150, and most that I have looked at are in that 150-250 range.. for Engagement pics..

    some even include these with their wedding packages.. so that might be something for you to consider.. 
    Good Luck! I know its hard also when you know someone and kidn of have a connection.. I have a friend/mutual acquaintence who is very nice, reliable, and loves photography and is trying to get into it.. but I dont know if I am willing to let them shoot my wedding, It's something I'll never be able to get back..

    I agree w/ ToriAnn1981.. I am new to all of this knottie stuff...but my photographer is definitely in your price range, and she did a great job with all of my engagement photos.... I am never comfortable in front of the camera and have always been known to run from them.. she made it great!!!

    Personally, I don't like the work. It looks very amateurish to me. Crystal Fielding is a great option in your price range though.

    The person I am leaning towards is Photography by Laurel .. I think a PP posted her link as well...
    So far from what I've seen I really like her work... she did my friends weding back in May and they loved her!

    I know Crystal Felding comes recommended here as well and I've been watching her work, I reached out to her but havent heard anythign back and then I saw her post something on her page about being really far behind..

    Theres also Ivan Apfel I think in that range, and Joseph Casal, and Alina M.

    Flor, try my wedding photographer, Travis Harris.  He's definitely within your budget.  He's relatively new to the wedding photography biz but he's shot a lot of commercial and model photography so his range is great.  Check out his website:


    OH!  And my engagement photographer, Ivan Apfel, is having a summer engagement shoot special for only $99.  I'm not sure if he has any dates left, but it's definitely worth a shot:

    I have booked Crystal and am very happy with her so far. Her package is 1500 and includes 4 shoots. Im doing e-pics, e-party, shower, and wedding.     My first photographer's work was over processed, it just seemed like she clicked one setting and didn't do anything different. :(

    I'm now with Alicja Colon of Taken Photography and I'm just a big fan of hers! She really works on each individual photo and makes them even more polished and beautiful, plus she is super sweet and is great with communication. Her prices are also amazing, my package with a 2nd shooter for 4 hours and a cd of photos is under $900. Her website, under Investments has some of her prices in a pdf and her wedding packages start at $600. <3 her!

    Ok so, summary

    1) I love Alina M. but she is a bit pricey for my budget :( ugh
    2) Crystal, I dont love her work, it just seems so plain, is it me? please someone persuade me and help me see something I am not seeing!!! because her prices are the best so far
    3) Taken is really cool but she is in between Alina M. and Crystal in pricing and how much i like the pictures

    anyone got more opinions, suggestions or persuasion for Crystal?????

    Don't let someone persuade you for somethign that you don't love!!  You will regret it later!!!

    I think I am right there with you on Crystal's photos.. after looking at other photographers, I didnt feel like she was up to par with the rest of them..

    I know this may sound crazy, but have you possibly looked on Craigslist? I know you said some of these were out of your price range and they tend to be the low end of the spectrom as far as good photographers go...

    Maybe you can find something there? Or contact the local art institute? Or even the Palm Beach Photographic institute? Maybe you can find someone who doesnt typically shoot wedings, but is still an established photographer??? Just a thought..

    The photographer I'm using is Otto Haring. Haven't taken photos with him yet, but his prices are great.
