Sams or Costco list?

MIL is taking us shopping when we move in together next Saturday (eeee!). What type of bulk items should we buy? So far I have:
Paper Towels
Toilet paper
peanut butter
green beans
chicken.

  • cleaning supplies
    zipblock bags
    shampoos/soaps

Honesly I do not buy a lot of food in bulk because it's only the 2 of us.  If I had a larger freezer I think I would by more.

I get shredded cheddar cheese from costco and divide it into ziploc bags and keep the extras in the freezer. They thaw out fine in the fridge and it saves me from having to buy it all the time since I use it for casseroles and tacos pretty often.
  • Flour
    Sugar

Anything that is a staple for the foods you cook, and won't go bad. I'll keep thinking.

  • Sodas
I bought the ribs they had for sale last time I was there and they're freaking awesome.

  • Good call about the cheese.

Already have cleaning supplies, but ziplocks is a great idea.

I'm a huge baker so I already have the largest flour/sugar I can get lol

Thanks for the advice, I've never shopped in bulk before.

if you bake then butter, oli, etc are good to have around.

The things to remember about buying in bulk is (1) will  you use it before it gets bad and (2) do you  have the room to store it?

I do not have a lot of room and because of the climate things go bad before I can use them.

  • We do have room to store. That's why I'm looking more at dry goods. Chicken, we will eat before it goes bad. We have it 3-4 times a week.

<div>Very good questions to ask. The freezer is my friend for some of this stuff, otherwise it definitely WOULD go bad since it's just DH and I.</div>
  • If you drink bottled water, stock up while you're there. It's cheaper at Sam's than anywhere else.

Their meats are also cheaper than anywhere else (unless there's a good sale going on at your local market) so if you've got a large enough freezer you should stock up on those as well.

If you  have the room, I would invest in a vacuum sealer.  I love mine and it really comes in handy to break things down into smaller packages.

Otis Spunkmeyer cookies are great.  They are frozen and you just have to take out a couple and throw them in the oven for a few minutes.  They are great when you have a sweet tooth but do not want to bake a whole batch.

  • If you eat cereal, Costco is a great place to get it. The boxes look big, but they generally have two bags the size of normal cereal bags.
    Vitamins and OTC meds.
Costco has a lot of good frozen foods (tamales, ravioli, etc).
Some non traditional items: Costco has cheap books and socks!

Yes! I love my food sealer. We'll buy 2 - 3 months worth of meat at a time and then seal it up and freeze it.

They sell a decent food sealer at Walmart for around $50.00. Walmart also sells a value brand of the sealing bags that are way cheaper than the name brand ones.
  • Pasta
    Rice
    Tomato Sauce
    Tuna
    Coffee

Those are some of the things we buy most often for food when we go!

  • These a great suggestions.

Tell me why I need a vaccum sealer instead of ziplocs? Are they reusable or something?

  • If you have a big enough freezer - bags of frozen fruit.  I just asked our nutritionist on staff if this was "OK" and she said its pretty much the next best thing.  I believe that Dole has pretty good varieties & there is no added sugars to it (mostly citric acid to help it keep), and they are great for smoothies and just thaw out for snack time:) and...according to the bag - they're "wildy nutritious" lol.

After a couple of months, you'll get freezer burn if you use Ziplocks. The vacuum sealer sucks out all of the air, so no freezer burn.

We had steaks a few weeks ago that were in our chest freezer for close to a year and they tasted like we just bought them. If they had been in Ziplocks they would not have been edible.

The food sealer is seriously a great investment

    LOVE the vacuum sealer

you can make entire casseroles and the cut them into single serving sizes, vacuum seal it and then you have a grab and go lunch or dinner.  Nice for those times when life is hectic

Vacuum sealer. Best thing ever. We buy things in bulk at Costco (as PPs mentioned) and keep them forever. Either in the freezer, fridge, or out in canisters.

ETA: FWIW, we never take a list to Costco. But we usually don't spend more than $150. We got a hanging plant a few weeks ago that was almost dead. He is now thriving on our balcony. There's all KINDS of stuff you can get there. I highly recommend a membership.

  • Bay leaves. We cook a lot of beans in the house.

I was about to suggest this. I think Sams carries the refills for the FoodSaver. I LOVE my FoodSaver. No more freezer burn!
