Dip for vegetables

What do you use? I like to eat baby carrots but I used to dip them in ranch dressing and that just uses up too many calories that I would like to use elsewhere. What are your tips/suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Dip for vegetables

  • Hummus! I basically eat raw veggies so I can eat hummus. I'm sure it would be a little weird if I just sat with a tub of hummus and a spoon.

I'll also use low-fat peanut butter with celery or apples.

I used to use low-fat ranch, but it doesn't really add any good vitamins or nutrients so I stick with hummus and PB.

  • I just eat my veggies plain, which probably doesn't help, but I wanted to address something mentioned by PP.

You really should NOT eat reduced-fat peanut butter. As far as I can tell, reduced fat PB does not actually have fewer calories (both Jif and Skippy reduced fat PBs have 190 calories in each 2 T serving which is the same as my full-fat PB.) Plus, the fat in PB is actually what is good for you: consumption of healthful fats like the ones found in nuts and nut products is actually associated with lower body weight. So basically, they've changed peanut butter in a way that makes it less healthful and not actually lower calorie. What's the point?
  • Ditto on the peunut butter advice.

I make my own veggie dip using fat-free sour cream (i'm watching my CHOL) and then mixing in things like dill, onions and bell peppers, garlic, or a little Mrs. Dash seasoning.
  • Hmm, I've never thought of or heard that about peanut butter. But, it makes sense. I do eat a decent anount of it, so I hope I'm not doing more harm than good. The reduced fat still has about 12g of fat per serving. So, that would be the healthy fats still, correct?

Yes, those are still healthy fats.  You're usually trading in reduced good-fat intake for higher sugar levels when going with the reduced fat version.

  • I second the hummus!  I love it.  My friend recently made edamame hummus for a party and it was delicious.  Here is the recipe:   http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/edamame-hummus-recipe/index.html.
  • Thanks, all. I just ate my carrots with hummus - delicious! Plus, about half the calories as the ranch dressing and more nutritious. Loving it.

  • I love tribe origins hummus with carrots and mini cucmbers! My fav!
  • Try laughing cow cheese. 35 cals a wedge and it's TASTY! Also comes in a variety of flavors (garlic herb one is my fave). They also just came out with cream cheese (45 cals a wedge).

  • I eat all my veggies plain and boring :o
    However.. some good options are..

-Hummus BUT READ THE LABEL. Many brands add a bunch of sugar. Be picky or make it yourself.

-Get (or make yourself) the ranch dip dry packets and mix it with nonfat greek yogurt. Tastes pretty much the same but MUCH better for you. You can also do the same with any dry seasoning packets... but I do suggest you google recipes to make them yourself. It'll help you avoid added sodium and sugar.

    - Peanut butter is fine in moderation (agree.. don't go FR on that) and Almond butter is considered even "better". I love Almond butter, so that's what I will use when I need to up my fat for the day.

-Edamame puree is super easy to make (again google recipes to find your style) and very light and fluffy.

I will often cut up tomatoes if they are starting to go bad, mix some onion and herbs in (basil, parsley, pepper, etc) and scoop that with my cucumbers/celery.. It's veggie-on-veggie and delicious :P

  • I eat my veggies with hummus...sooo yummy!

  • plain greek yogurt with spices added (garlic, dill etc)
I like all natural peanut butter (keeps all the good fat, minus all the crap added to the regular stuff) - soooo good on an apple!

  • I use homemade hummus or if you want a healthier peanut butter alternative, PB2  is powdered peanut butter (just add water to desired consistency) and it is lower in calories and fat % it sounds strange but I think it's delicious.

If you have a Trader Joes near you,  They have all types of really cool stuff,  Like Queso Dip,  only 15 calories per 2 tablespoons!

Kinda ridiculous.  but in a good way

I was just going to suggest this. I'm a total Greek yogurt convert.
