Name change in Nevada- an FYI

Just a heads up...

I was planning on keeping my maiden name and having his as well but with no hyphen (ex: mrs. smith jones). Nevada no longer allows this, and they no longer allow you to change your middle name to your maiden name. I have to spend $270 to file a petition in family court, then hire a newspaper to publish that petition for 3 weeks ($70) before I can even have a hearing. This is so dumb, just FYI for when you head over to the social security office! End vent.

  • That sucks!!!  I'm planning on doing the same thing.
  • WTF.  Are you still going through with it?  I was going to change my maiden name to my middle name too... WHY?!?!?!?!

  • So, what are the options in NV? Just keep your name, or change it to your husband's? Is hyphenating it even an option? I think people should have the right to format their name how they want when they get married. I think here in CA, you have those options... Didn't even think of it varying by state.
  • Thanks Sarah: The options are to hyphenate or just take his. This would make my last name a 17 letter long hot mess. I'm going to go through with it, it would break my heart to eliminate my maiden name all together. I wish it was the men that had to deal with this, lol And if you are NV and are trying to do the same, go to the Family Courthouse on Pecos, not the courthouse on Lewis. Yup, I was at the wrong one all morning

  • That is just ridiculous!! I'm so sorry. You should be able to format your name how you want it. I don't see how/why it differs by state... in TX I did it through the social security office & had no issues at all moving maiden name to a second middle name. You should have the option to do that in ANY state!!! (freaking government)

  • seriously i had no idea and was planning to just add my fi last name to mine w no hyphen. I hate the hyphen. nevada laws are so lame. they are so strict about everything. as "free" as this country is you would think they would let you put your name how you wish. i am just as upset as you are:(
