Georgia-Atlanta

Great venue but no accomodations nearby

So I booked a great, rustic venue about an hour outside of Atlanta. Its in Monroe, GA. I have a lot of family traveling in from out of town - some driving, some flying. When I spoke with my venue they said there was plenty of accomodations, but after looking, the closest place that isn't dodgy is a good 20-30 minute drive, if not further.

I was hoping that some of you may have some suggestions. I'm almost considering telling people to stay in Atlanta and trying to shuttle people back and forth - but we don't really have the money for that. I'm just worried about having people drive an hour back and forth to my wedding, or the alternative, staying in some shady place off of the interstate.

Any ideas or words of encouragement would be helpful. Thanks!

Eh, that's a tough one.  Monroe isn't very far from Madison, GA and there are accomodations there. Also lots of B&B's in the area.  Lake Oconee is not *that* far away (I used to live there), and they have the Ritz Carlton, of course. Also several other hotels.  Athens is an option too...

As far as interstate hotels, as long as you're EAST of Covington, any hotel on I-20 heading east is safe.  :-)

Why not just stay in the accomodations that are 20-30 minutes away rather than "shuttle from Atlanta?"  With the way gas prices are, your guests will be pretty grumpy having to drive from Atlanta out to Monroe (and hope there aren't accidents, etc. on the way) rather than drive twenty minutes.

Have you tried vrbo? What about the B&Bs in downtown Monroe? Have you actually been to Monroe, or are you basing your accomodation information solely on the internet?

The closest accomodation to our venue is 8 miles away and takes 15-20 minutes.  The other accomodations that aren't "dodgy" are 15+ miles away.  I don't think 20-30 minutes is "extreme."

I'm getting married in Statham, GA (which is about 15 minutes from Monroe) and I went through the same thing. We booked hotels in Winder which weren't shady but they also weren't that nice.

Most of my guests are staying at the Homewood Suites in Lawrenceville, GA. It is about 25 minutes from our venue with easy access to 316 and 85. It is also right across the street from Discover Mills. I thought this was the best option because it wasn't too far from our venue but there were several restaurants, two malls and movie theaters within 10 minutes.

You can also check out Mall of Georgia too.

Can you share the venue you chose in Monroe. I've been searching venues in that area all day.

Wow, thank you so  much for all of the feedback! I didn't know anyone had even responded to my post. I'm glad you all don't think 20-30 minutes is too far away, that is definitely preferable over having to shuttle people back and forth from Atlanta.

I'll check into VRBO. Haven't seen any B&B's in Monroe, but I've only been there to see the venue. I hear that the Wayfarer is amazing, but it only has 3 rooms so it doesn't really help with guests. We were considering driving back out there to scope out the downtown area and see if there is something we're missing online. My contact at the venue is supposed to email me back some other options, but so far I've been told to check out hotels in Athens, Snellville, Conyers or Lawrenceville. I'll have to check out the Homewood Suites...sounds like a good location since its near shopping and entertainment.

Oh and the venue is called the Cotton Warehouse. Its absolutely beautiful and just opened in January - http://www.thecottonwarehouse.com/.

Thanks so much again for all of your help, I really appreciate it!
