Anyone have rain on their wedding day?

My wedding is one week away, and right now there is a 60% chance of rain for that day.  My wedding and reception are both indoors, so rain wouldn't ruin anything I have planned, but I am really hoping to have some photos taken outside.  I am really trying to "let it go" and tell myself that it doesn't matter if it rains, because ultimately I know it doesn't, but I can't help but hope it doesn't rain.
I am just wondering if anyone of you had rain on your wedding day, and if it honestly impacted your day.

It rained the day before, and in the early morning hours on the day of my daughters wedding.  Because we did not want to take a chance getting her dress dirty before the wedding, all bride related pictures were taken indoors. The pictures are still beautiful. Many of the groomsmen and grooms family photos were taken outdoors because all they needed to worry about was shoes.

If your photographer is good, he or she will find a way to still have beautiful backdrops for your photos.  If it clears up at all, you may still find a window of time wherein you can take some outdoor photos while on "solid" versus grassy ground.  Our bridal party went to a beachfront promenade with cobblestone, that allowed for beautiful outdoor pictures but kept the girls clothing from being ruined.

I don't think you will be disappointed with your pictures whether indoors or out.  However, with only a 60% chance of rain, you may catch a break at some point throughout the day.  While you have time, try to think of outdoor locations that have nongrassy areas on which to stand that would still allow some beautiful backdrops.

ETA:  We bought umbrellas for all the girls in either fuschia or zebra print (DD's "signature" print) long before we even considered rain, just to use as "props" in a few pictures.  Pictures using those umbrellas honestly are some of the best photos taken that day!
  • I mean, you should know the weather in your area pretty well. Are there typical rain patterns? Where we were married, there was a chance of rain, but we knew it was likely going to be morning showers and nice the rest of the day, our ceremony being at 5pm. That was typical for the area, and out entire event was outside.

I don't exactly remember, but I think it showered slightly that morning and did not impact anything.
  • Hon - the best advice I can give  you is this:  there are things you CAN control and things you CANNOT control.  If you can't control it, don't put it on the list of things to worry about.

You are getting close to your wedding day now so here is the recipe for a happy bride on her wedding day - roll with whatever comes your way.  Don't freak out, don't worry if the flowers ar the wrong shade of whatever color or the wrong cake gets delivered.  As soon as your feet hit the floor on your wedding day, take charge of the day and tell yourself that as long as you, groom, and officient show up, you are going to have a great wedding day.

Maybe you can think of some novel way to use a rainy day in pics if it happens.  I know it is hard to let things go when they deal with your "wedding vision" and you don't know that this will be an issue.  I hope you get a sunny day, but if not, roll with it.  You will be so happy to be married and party with everyone.  It will all be good.

<div>This was me, exactly. The forecast for our wedding day changed pretty much every day for the 7 days before. Started out sunny with a 10% chance of showers and ended up at cloudy with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms. I woke up the morning of the wedding and it was POURING rain. I couldn't help but be a little bummed out. It ended up raining pretty much all day, and I, like you, had really wanted some pictures with my girls outside before the ceremony. However, it ended up working for the best as we were running a bit behind with getting ready anyway, and wouldn't have had time to go to the outdoor location, so it was a blessing in disguise as it helped me not freak out about being behind schedule. My photographer found some great places to take pictures inside the venue and they few I've seen turned out great! I'm sure your photog will find some spots indoors that will be just as great as some of the outdoor locations, so try not to worry too much. You could ask your photog what their back up plan for rain is, that might help put your mind as ease.<div>
</div><div>Also, we got lucky in that it let up raining just enough that we were able to get a few outdoor pics after the ceremony. Yes, my dress got a little wet and my curly hair didn't last as long as it probably would have otherwise, but I'm glad we braved the sprinkles because the outdoor pics really did turn out nice. So if there is a lull in the rain, take advantage of it! And cloudy days actual make for better outdoor pics because no one is squinting. :)</div><div>
</div><div>One last tip - make sure your make up artist uses fixing spray! I did my own makeup and got the All Night Fixing Spray from Urban Decay (at Sephora or Ulta) and my makeup stayed PERFECT the whole night, even with the rain and everything. So if you're worried about rain (and I was, even though you can't control it!), def get some fixing spray to  help put at least one of those worries behind. :)</div></div><div>
</div><div>Have so much fun on your big day! Soak it all in, it really does go by just as fast as everyone says it does.</div>
  • I had rain and wasn't happy about it at all.  But agree with pp's that the pictures will come out better than you might expect.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I was in the same situation--wedding indoors, but we really wanted our pics outside. They were forecasting 90s and t-storms on our wedding day. I freaked out until the day before, when I realized I just needed to let it go. There was nothing I could do, and at least I was getting married and it would be inside!

I woke up to rain on the wedding day. It was funny because in the salon, everyone was telling me, "Don't worry; it's good luck to rain on your wedding day!" I was excited and happy anyways. The clouds cleared by mid-day and we had partial cloudiness from there on out. Talk to your photographer---if it isn't pouring, you can still get some pics outside with umbrellas or under overhangs that can actually be really neat. They can also start scoping out some nice places inside for pics. Also remember that you can get better pics when it is overcast; the lighting is nicer and people won't be squinting in the pictures.

I totally get where you are coming from; but you are right to try not to let it bother you. If nothing else, remember the forecast is usually never right :)

  • Photography is my main hobby. I love taking portraits when it's cloudy, the light is diffused and makes for some beautiful shots (no harsh shadows!) :) Throw in a little rain, it gives an etheral romantic look that can't be manufactured.   A few ideas... find the biggest clear umbrella you can.  It lets the light through and you can get some super awesome shots of you two while you stay dry :)  Maybe also if you have time, find for your girls some rainboots in your colors :)  I've seen that done in lots of pictures, it looks pretty fun and it saves your fancy shoes :)  I see you're in Kentucky, if you're worried about the severe afternoon popup storms like we get here in SC that knock out the power, see how many candles you can get for your reception area. Acoustic dancing by candlelight?  Pure romance :)  Good luck and I wish you a beautiful wonderful happy day! :D

  • So.. We live in Washington.. Lol.
    yeah. Rain..
We did a first look and right as we were doen with out photos and were going to move on to the WP photos, it started pouring..
We just took advantage of the situation:

We got a bunch of silly photos like these :) They all turned out sooo cute.
:) Rain is beautiful.. Don't let it bring you down! You have ZERO control over rain, so just roll with what the world gives ya!
  • I love rain, so I wouldn't be bothered by it at all.  I prefer rainy days to sunny ones anyway.  Besides, it's good luck.
  • We had a little rain in the morning before the wedding and late in the evening. Honestly it didn't matter at all, and the photos with the moody sky are gorgeous - much better than glaring sunlight!
  • Thanks Ladies.  The chance of rain has now lowered to 30%.  Whether it rains or not, I know it will be a great day!  I appreciate the feedback!

I am <strong>SO worried</strong> about this, too. & I can't figure out where we would do indoor pictures! I hope for nothing but clear skies for you on your big day! :)

    Exactly!
  • I was very emotional on my wedding weekend. It poured all weekend long AND i was having an outdoor beach wedding. I cried and was upset at first but then when I finally came to the realization that I had no control over the weather and no matter what the day would be perfect, I finally relaxed and just let it be.  It was better that way. It poured on our wedding day and luckily we were very blessed to get a window of time where the rain stopped and sun tried to peek out of the clouds. It was even better that way because the weather was a nice breeze instead of extremely hot. And the pictures came out beautiful!

Just take it all in stride, all in all you will have your perfect day!

  • We got married in Arizona, and we thought that the one thing we wouldn't have to worry about was rain. Lo and behold - it rained. But - it was a blessing (as our minister said) - and we ended up getting wonderful outdoor pics anyway, including one with a rainbow in the background.

You'll be fine. At the end of the day, will you be married? Yeah. That's what matters.

  • I have heard that having rain on your wedding day is good luck:)
