Name Confusion?

So, I was just throwing out some paperwork; I usually go through my stuff once a year, just after I file my taxes and throw anything over 7 years old that I won't need (remember that there is NO statute of limitations with your taxes, so you MUST keep all that) but I was thinking like copies of my old electric bills, etc. It's going out.

Anyway, I ran across some things that I had printed out for my daughter's shower a couple of years ago. Her married name is very common, and so there were several ladies registered with her first and last name!!! My own name isn't that uncommon, either, and there are three of us by that name in my agency. We are always exchanging e-mails, "I think this belongs to you, because you're in the obesity prevention group" or "uh, this must be yours because it refers to Texas and I have Minnesota as my area."

I actually google my name once in a while just to see who is out there, and there's even a porn star by my name. :-P It's spelled differently, but still. . . It's one of the things that makes me NOT worry about facebook. My name is so common that you would have to know something else about me to find the right one.

Even my folks had another couple in my small hometown with the same first and last names of both husband and wife. Odd, eh? Anyone else out there get confused with someone of the same name?

Re: Name Confusion?

  • There is at least one other woman here in DC with my first and last names. Once, there was an article in the Washington Post about her -- very cool, with career accolades, etc. -- my mom received phone calls from her friends. We were all confused for a while. That was about 25 years ago.

More recently, within the last 5 years or so, someone with my name (or trying to run a scam??) made an appointment for a facial at the salon (my salon) with the owner. She showed up and the owner questioned her. It seems she truly has the same name. The owner referred her to another of her anesthetists for an appointment. Scary.

The third incident happened about 6 years ago, when my son and I were returning from the Dominican Republic. We were standing in line at the airport and the customs (or is that immigration?) officer called my name. Two of us replied, "Yes?" It was so weird!!! She told me that she'd been mistaken for me (in name only, we look nothing alike) while there, but that we wouldn't be confused for much longer. She was getting a divorce and changing her last name.

    Bizarre!
  • I have a common last name, but a very uncommon first name, so I've NEVER been mistaken for anybody else:-)

  • Hmmm, had to try it when you suggested it. I thought my married last name was fairly uncommon (compared to my previous married last name- which was really common), but there are a plethora of us. 2 here in Mass. One business guru who gets interviewed a lot. One in IMdb.

I use Donna Maiden Married on facebook, mostly so people who knew me before I was married can find me. The bulk of my facebook friends are HS classmates, we have a group that gets together once a year.

No registries listed for me on the Knot. Although there is a 2004 registry for Donald mylastname. I checked Amazon, too, and there's nothing there. No gifts for me :(

Lisa- WOW, what a neat story. You are lucky that the two of you have not crossed wires in more difficult to unravel ways. ~Donna

  • My former sister-in-law and I had the same first and last name; we were referred to as Debbie 1 (me as I was there first) and Debbie 2. Well, she is still there, but I have remarried and changed my name. Problem solved? No, my husband's former wife was also a Debbie. Fortunately (?) she is deceased and she was not the mother of his children. But we do have to clarify sometimes.

  • Okay, WEIRD. I just googled my name...I haven't done this in a while.

Turns out Crane wedding invitations site on how to address envelopes has an example of how to address an invitation to a female military officer, and in the example it uses MY NAME AND RANK (I'm active duty Air Force). I have to stress, I have a VERY uncommon name, and I know for a fact that I am the only person in the entire Air Force with my same first and last name.

Weirder, the person in the example listed as the "husband" has a name extremely similar to my fiance's name.

I almost feel like I'm being stalked.

  • LOL Avion! I didn't know you were in the Air Force. My hubby retired after 22 years in the AF. He was a Master Sgt.

Anyway, I've always said everyone with my surname (didn't change it when I married). was related, because it was a made up name from immigration when my great grandmother came through with her 6 kids from Poland, via Liverpool and Canada back in the early 1900's. The original Polish last name had a lot of szcz's together in it.

Then, with the invention of the internet, once when I googled our last name found out there was a "Pepito same last name" and "Bernardo same last name" in California. My cousins live in CA, and one of them who was curious contacted one of these "imposters". Seems they were born on some island somewhere to people with that last name then came to the US. We never did find out if one of our family moved to an island long ago and had kids, LOL.

The uniqueness of our name is mostly the reason I kept mine when I married. We are a small lot, but proud of our heritage and "Americanized" name. Plus, my son's dad had nothing to do with him, I raised him alone, and when he's famous one day I want EVERYONE to know I'm his mom Wink
  • Sue, totally random addition, but my mom has a very unique maiden name and comes from a big Catholic family. A few years ago a new guy showed up to my squadron with the same last name -- we did some research and realized we were third cousins. If it had been a more common last name (like MY maiden name) we probably wouldn't have ever known we were related!

Yup ... that is really kooky, knowing there are at least four of us (or were) here in DC! It is one more reason that I absolutely LOVE having 4 names. Sometimes, having 2 middle names is a pure PITA. But when it comes down to truly proving my identity... there is no one else that has the same 4 name combo.

Ewww ... that is a little creepy. My next move (I'm very paranoid, so likely not yours) would be to call Crane's to find out if they created the sample or used a customer's invitation. Again, I am paranoid about that kind of stuff.

Okay, I finally figured it out! I have a cousin who does writing for several websites, and it turns out she is in charge of all of the content on Crane's website, and she just used names of people she knew. She's offered to take it down:-) I feel lot better about that now.

  • I was in the Air Force too! I miss it sometimes, but others, not so much....lol.

After googling my name, I am the only Amy with my last name in Alabama. lol.
  • Interesting. My last name is the anglicization of a Scottish name. I'm related to a LOT of people--and heavily into my Scottish Ancestry. We have "septs" which are other names that belong to the Scottish clan, either joined by marriage or by fighting a common enemy (the norseman) or by using land belonging to the original family.

My husband's last name is Ukrainian, and has basically one vowel amongst 9 letters (not counting the y) and it ends in a z. My stars. Anyway, it's not very common, as you can imagine, but in the little area of Pennsylvania that his dad is from, there are dozens of them there. And interestingly, in my agency, I was walking down the hall in a building I normally am not in, and came across a name sign for an office, and the name was very similar to my husband's.

I think we're all more alike, the more we try to be different. :-)

My last name is pretty uncommon. It is a long Italian last name and everyone who has it is the ancestor of one of four families in Italy. When I was in eight grade my friends mom was dating a guy with my last name. I told him my grandmothers name and he told me everything about my family turns out he was my 3rd or 4th cousin.

There is one other person with the exact same name as me that I know of. She is even about the same age but checking with facebook she is now married so no more confusion.

ETA: Just googled my name and it also pulls up my previous married name. Anyone know how to get google to remove that information?

  • My new sister-in-law and I will have the same name after the wedding. The only difference is hers has an e on the end of her first name.
