  There's an appraiser in Birmingham - Birmingham Gemological Services. A friend used him and liked him. I think you have to make an appointment.
  
  I just took my ring to Golden Gifts in Livonia because it was near work and a friend recommended it. They looked at the paperwork that came with the diamond and mailed me an appraisal about a week later. I have no idea what my ring cost, but FI was happy with the appraisal. Appraisal cost me $25.
  
  I honestly think you could take it to any jeweler. I also like Astrein's Jewelry in Birmingham.

  We got my ring appraised where we bought it, at Dillon's Jewelers in Westland. The owner, Gary, is a family friend of my FMIL and her sister. He is honest and down to earth, and he gets my vote!

  I second Golden Gifts in Livonia. The owners are good friends of FIs family and that is where we bought our rings and got them appraised.

  Brian Larson at Larson Jewelers in Novi is great. He has saved me a lot of money recently. He's a good guy and he knows his stuff.

  I used Miner's Den in Royal Oak.  I didn't buy my ring there.  They were excellent with me, and have a excellent reputation if you google them as well.  I trusted them leaving family heirloom jewlery there.  They did my appraisal and several repairs to a family ring in less than a week.

  We just picked out my engagement ring from there! They were kind enough to fix a ring I was wearing at the time as well. I was pretty impressed with them.
  
  I'm guessing it would be a bad idea to get a ring appraised at the same place you've purchased it though...?
