This is awkward...

So, I'm still adding to our list as I've got 4 months left before it goes live (why is it going live only 1.5 months before the wedding is beyond me) and I've found myself wanting things like sauce boats, art deco inspired ice buckets and cake stands. Now, this might seem quite normal to you guys, but I never saw myself as someone who will browse sauce boats with cheeks burning with excitement... It's like I have this weird alter ego inside me, a cross between Martha Stewart/Delia Smith and one of the Real Housewives of BH. Awkward...

  • I've never heard of a "going live" date.  Usually, when you register, your registry is posted for all the world to see.  Unless, you can tell the store to hold off on posting it in the store or online.  Anyway, most likely people won't buy from your registry until the week of your shower.  Where did you register?

Getting excited over mundane things like gravy boats and ice buckets can be a normal reaction to registering.

I live in the UK, so it's a bit different here - registry at John Lewis goes live 1.5 months earlier and not a day earlier. Not many places here do gift registry, actually - very few to be honest. It's also not very popular in UK to give shower gifts (other than booze...), and our engagement party was in December.

I'm not excited that we have a gift registry, and also I didn't get as excited about anything on our list except the very bizarre (in my world) things I didn't even know I wanted...!

  • I totally understand. I was one of those girls who never understood why anyone would want fine china. I would make fun of people who 'picked out their pattern' Man, how the tables have turned! Picking out my china, stemware, flatware and apartment decor has been my favorite part of the registry process. I'd giggle like a little girl. It's just so different when YOU'RE the one using it. Now I love all of that stuff.

I actually found a white antique cow shaped creamer in my grandma's basement & almost passed out with excitement...it was quite embarassing.

Exactly... Before I was all, like, plates? Who cares about plates? Or new toasters? Or napkins?! Now, I'm the one that runs around the shop, picking out THE PERFECT square plate and two sets of placemats (casual with a washed-out Union Jack pattern and fine dining slab ones..and colour-coordinated napkins of course!). I'm SO with you on the giggling part, sister! Oh and also home decor - we're buying next year, but I already know what colours and furniture we're using. Sometimes I want to slap myself to sober up ;)

I would most probably do the same, after I'd have pierced everyone's eardrums with high-pitched unidentified noises and such.

My coworker asked me what was wrong with me after I laughed so hard from reading that. I totally identify. I also found an entire set of white china in the basement too. I initially thought it was day-to-day dishes, but then read on the bottom it's actually fine china. Who would've thought! <div>
</div><div>Although I only rent an apt for now, it was super fun to pick out furnishings. Of course, I have expensive taste & can't afford what I like. I got as close as I could get without going broke. Oh the silly things of life.</div>

We're renting too, and had most of the furniture (except the bed) already, so not much fun here (and again - except choosing the bed). It's a small one bedroom flat so not much will fit in, plus FI is pacifying me with purchases - in the end we're moving to a completly different county, miles away from where we are now (on the border of London and Surrey). I've got an expensive taste too, but luckily there's Homesense (not sure if you got it in The US) and I found a website that sells really stylish and excelent quality furniture at half price (orders are fulfilled once a week, they don't stock anything in the warehouse and ship directly from the maker).

He already asked where are we going to keep the stuff from registry... Storage boxes, of course, because it's all small things. We have an average of £50 per gift (with 3 more expensive items) because our guests have to fork out about £450 just to come to the wedding, so we didn't want to go OTT. Still... Vases! Platters! Cake stands! Mini-cube vases! Gravy boats! Cutlery (slightly squareish to match plates, of course)! And... THE MIGHTY ART DECO ICE BUCKET!!!
    ...hand me the gun, someone...
