We can't agree on photographers!

I am starting to get so frustrated about this, so any advice would be extremely welcome:

My fiance and I can't agree on how important the photos are. To me, besides my dress and the ceremony/reception locations (and everything else...), the photos are the absolute most important part of our day, and I really want a good quality photographer who makes us comfortable and who will listen to us. I feel like if I'm spending so much time and effort putting together an awesome wedding, I want someone photographing all of that and capturing every detail.

My fiance, however, thinks that because the wedding album ends up on a shelf somewhere, it's ok to just skimp on the photography and hire someone whose work is just so so and who offers very poor quality albums.

HELP!! Am I being insensitive to what he thinks is important? How can we compromise? I'm not looking to spend tons of money. I am looking in the low end average for photographers in our area ($1,500) for the best value we can get. My fiance thinks I should just hire the cheapest person and be done with this hassle.

My suggestion would be to use a photographer that you love, but skip the album. You can always purchase an album later, but at least you'll have great pictures that you can get prints of for your home. I think your fiance is right to a point- the album does just sit on the shelf, but that doesn't mean it's not important! The photography is a major thing for me too. I actually just booked ours even though we're not getting married until September 2011. Our photographer is shooting the wedding and doing engagement pictures. Nothing else is included in our package besides a disc with all of the edited images. If the one you like only offers packages with albums, ask if they can cut that out of the package or offer you a print credit instead.

Wow, this sounds just like my life. FI says we will never look at the pictures, why spend so much money on them? I think they are one of the most important things. His mom knew someone who was amateur and would do the whole day for $850 (told him that price without much information) and the photog I wanted was on the low side of average ($1750).

However, once I explained to FI the differences between the packages and what you really get (ie, 1 photog vs. 2, rights to all pictures, insurance, engagement, etc) we realized that the amateur would have only saved about $400 tops. Then, the pro gave us an extra $200 off. That obviously made the decision a lot easier.

I would just say talk to your FI a lot and explain to him how important it is to you. After I had made my case (several times) FI realized that it wasn't worth fighting over $200-400 and tends to let me make the final decisions that make me happy (that sounds kinda Bridezilla-ish, but it really isn't).

I also agree with pp. We are not getting any albums, just the rights to the pictures. That way, after the wedding I can do what I want with the pictures. I plan to make 1 album for me, and 2 for our parents. But I am very crafty and will really enjoy doing that. I think that the albums that photogs offer are very pricey. You can make them yourself for way cheaper, depending what kind of look you are looking for. There are many online websites to use.

    Sorry so long! Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, ladies! I think that I was thinking only in terms of albums and  pricing for those. I talked with my wedding planner, who got married two years ago, and she told me she actually hasn't ordered her album yet. She (and you guys, too!) helped me see that it's not the album pricing I should be worried about, I should be worried about what we get on the day of our wedding, and what the photographer's style is so that it matches our own visions for our photos.

    Thanks for the help!
