We're foodies and we want amazing food!

We are getting married in Sept or October.  As foodies, we'd love to go somewhere with amazing food.  Maybe a cruise or an all inclusive?  Any suggestions?  Definitely somewhere warm!

Perhaps I'm wrong... but if I wanted amazing food, I wouldn't pick a cruise or an AI.  Food is included on those kinds of trips so it doesn't scream "fabulous food HERE!!" to me at all.  But maybe I'm biased - I hate AIs.

Personally, I'd go off to Italy or Provence (in France) and explore restaurants off the beaten path.

    <div>Ditto.</div><div>
</div><div>Although we went on safari in SA and they are all AI (you are out in the bush with nothing around, not choice really) and the food was amazing.   We then went up to Paris.  The food was amazing there also.</div>

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I'm not sure what your budget's like, but if you want to stay domestic, you could try Miami or Charleston/Savannah. They each have their own "signature" style of food, but a lot of amazing chefs of all different cuisines migrate to those cities.

Mmmm now I'm hungry just thinking about it!

Cruise food is fairly pedestrian... so if you're a foodie it will not impress.

  • I have to agree with pp. I'm sure there are exceptions, perhaps going with a luxury line like Seabourn, Silversea, etc. but I do not associate a cruise or AI with gourmet dining. If you really enjoy fine dining having your meals be mass produced Americanized fare would be a nightmare. I feel like the point traveling somewhere is to experience the culture which would mean venturing out to enjoy local cuisine.

If you go on one of those boutique cruises where there are 20 guests or fewer, often the food is wonderful.  Those kinds of cruises are usually very very expensive, and you could probably go spend a wonderful week in France or Italy for the same price or less.

I wouldn't go to an AI if you're a foodie.  Most of the people I know who go to resort towns who are foodies opt to go to a regular resort and pay for their food both on the resort and off-resort.  Most AIs serve middle-level food and beverage because they anticipate guests trying to "make the most" of their money and eat and drink heavily without concern about the quality of what they're consuming.
  • I've been to a few AI's and the food was okay. Nothing special. We are taking a road trip to California, in search of good food. Good luck finding a honeymoon destinations! :)
  • Aruba has AMAZING restaurants!

  • Likuliku resort in Fij i has some of the most amazing food I've ever eaten and DH and  I are definitely foodies.  Out of this world.  You haven't mentioned a budget though.  I agree that France or Italy could be good options, and I'd throw Spain in there as well.  Napa/Sonoma have great restaurants and October would be a beautiful time to visit.

I love Spain, and Italy .  If you go to Italy make sure to go to Bologna (possibly the best food I have eaten in Italy).  I was also a fan of the food in Greece and Paris. If you are looking to stay state side there are so many places in the US you can go.  Just find a destination that you guys are interested in and look up some good places to eat in the area (maybe use local boards to get some ideas?)

My parents just got back from Siena (and Italy in general), and they said the food was as good as anything in Florence, but everything is a fraction of the price.  There are ways of having an excellent experience in Europe for less money than in the "big" destinations.  I'll ditto the Bologna recommendation.  I believe you can fly directly to Milan from Atlanta, then you can train it around, down to Bologna or even out to Le Marche (really awesome ciauscolo -- a soft sausage typical of the region) for yummy yummy food.

Yes, there should be a Delta flight. Or there used to be. Also, I'll jump on the Italy rec. And Spain.

OP, if you want restaurants recs for Barcelona, please let me know. We found some awesome local restaurants there that were super cheap.
  • i found the food in siena to be about the same price across the board as in florence. there are more expensive places and less expensive places to eat in every city.

OP-what's your budget? length of time for the trip? other interests or things you like to stay away from?

  • Barbados!  It is a total foodie island- I would stay at the Crane, enjoy the amazing beaches and rent a car and explore the island, the food is awesome!
  • True story-- Siena has passed a law restricting the number of "ethnic" food places inside the city limits.  This goes for McD's, kebab, and basically, anything OTHER than Italian.

That being said, YTH would ever think "Food== cruise or AI??" Weird.

The region of Emilia-Romagna, of which Bologna is part, and where I used to live, is the food basket of Italy.  The city of Parma (Parma ham, parmiggiano-reggiano) is there, as well as Modena (balsamic vinegar) and of course, Bologna.

I love that McDonald's is considered "ethnic" food anywhere.  I'm a little surprised that any Italian would classify it as "food."

  • I think the food in Paris and Spain is fabulous, but I've traveled all over and I still haven't found anything that beats Italy.  I wouldn't recommend Rome, in my experience it's a let down.  But Tuscany, Lake Como... that's where I'd go to eat well!

This. If you stick to "tourist" places, it will be expensive. But if you do your homework and find some smaller off the beaten path places you'll pay what the locals pay. There was a random place in Rome that I will never be able to find again that we ate at for about $20 per person and had a 7 or 8 course meal - they just kept bringing food and wine out. That's my second suggestion - try telling your waiter that you want his recommendations or the chef's recommendations and see what wonderful creations they bring out.

I also second Barbados, New Orleans & Charleston as amazing warm climates with incredible food and friendly people.
  • The Rioja area in Spain has some of the best restaurants anywhere (most Michelin stars per square mile).  And I agree with Italy and France.

If your budget doesn't permit Europe, consider Thailand.  Yes, the travel is long and the airfare can be high, but once you're there, it's pretty darned cheap.  And the food is fantastic.
  • Thanks everyone!  Italy would be amazing I'm sure.  Neither of us have ever been.  Can you go on a trip like that for $5000-$7000.

We know we want a beautiful beach.  How is the food in Hawaii?

Do you like pan-Asian food?  If so, the food scene in Hawaii is pretty good, especially in Honolulu.  Everything in HI is expensive, since it's an island, and expect to pay expensive US prices for things.

I think you could do Italy in your budget, although you'll have to do a little work.  But it'd be worth it.  There are beaches in Italy.  Obviously, when the Euro is doing well, Europe becomes very expensive for Americans, but I believe that the quality of what you receive in restaurants in Europe (outside of the touristy areas) is great in value.

A great resource for reasonable budget travel (to me) is the NYTimes Frugal Traveler.  I found great places to eat in Paris for fair prices using the NYTimes travel section.
  • I recommend Spain and Italy. Barcelona is a beautiful and romantic city and the food is always fresh and super yum. Also, there are lots of activities to chose from. You can hit the town or relax on the beach,
