Inner envelopes - What's the point?

This weekend is invitation stuffing/addressing weekend. So my invitations came with inner envelopes, I didn't even realize it and was fine with not having them.

But since they're there, I was thinking about using them, but I'm not sure I really even understand the point of inner envelopes? They just seem a little redundant... I realize that technically "& Guest" and kids' names are supposed to go on the inner envelope, but if I can put that info on the outer envelope, why bother writing out names again? Or should I use the inner envelopes and just leave them blank?

Would greatly appreciate any insight, thanks :)

Re: Inner envelopes - What's the point?

  • Oh, I thought "& Guest" could go on the outer envelope, am I wrong?
  • if there is no inner envelope then yes, it goes on the outer. but if you have or are using the inner envelope then that's the place for the guest.
  • If there isn't an inner envelope then the outer is used to convey that you can invite a guest and your child.

The use of an inner envelope is also for formal weddings.  You don't have to use an inner envelope but you should if the reception is black tie or formal.
  • If you don't want an inner envelope, don't do one. I've never received an invitation with 2 envelopes..

  • you don't have to use it at all, even if it is there. we ended up with them and weren't expecting them either. decided to use them since we do have them and they actually are very nice. when we ordered we got pearl lined envelopes, not realizing that the inner was what would be lined.
  • They are nice but not necessary.  Our nvitations didn't even come with inner envelopes.  A friend of mine though had inner envelopes in hers and the added weight of that was the reason she had to put extra postage on the invites.

  • The original point was that the outer envelope would get dirty or otherwise messed up, so there would be a nice clean envelope inside of it.
