Dress question

I found a dress online that I LOVE!!!!  I have contacted a designer off esty.com to make the dress.  He is only charging me 175 to make the dress....do you think it is a good idea to have someone make a dress or what are your thoughts.  I showed him a picture of the dress and he says that he will make it about 90 percent exact.  What do you all think?

Personally, I like to know what I'm getting, so that's why I think it's best to find a seamstress to make it locally just so that you can peek in on the process and adjust where necessary. BUT, I say if you have lots of time, go for it and if it doesn't work out, just get another dress! $175 is a steal!! Cute dress, btw! Mine is also lace ;)

I was going to say the exact same thing as Diana, what about finding someone locally that could make it? That way you can see samples of their work to determine quality and also check in while it's being made to make sure it's what you want.

I will echo going with someone local.  You will want to check in on it and get fittings done.

Where is he working out of? We had a huge number of girls go through dressmakers in China about 2 years ago, and things started out well and then turned into disasters. How many sales does the dealer have? What about the reviews?

My friend had her dress made in Thailand...while she was in Thailand. So, I cannot stress enough the importance of being there every step of the way. She had fittings every few days (since she was there for only a couple weeks) to get the fit right and she saw the progress of her dress. So just be weary of the Etsy option. I suggest taking your dress to local seamstresses and getting quotes on how much it will cost. That way, you can get an idea of a price range...

Maybe if you supplied fabric, you could pay for labor?

I saw what some of the girls on the boards went through after they ordered dresses from overseas or local seamstresses (sometimes friends or friends of the family (!)), and that's not a stress I'd ever volunteer for.  Unless you have 100% confidence that the seamstress is someone you can rely on and whose work you will love, at least  leave time to revert to a back-up option (meaning, order the dress so it'll be delivered at least 6 months in advance so you could get something else if you had to).

Thanks everyone for your input....I emailed the seller to see where she is based out of and if they have a shop outside of Etsy.  If I order it and it doesnt work out I have time to get another dress...so I am not too worried about that....we will see!  I just really really  love that dress and I would love to have that dress made!

Have you tried on something similar in person? I know I had a few things in mind before I went dress shopping and found something totally different that fit my body type. If not, I would advise doing that first before you order from the Etsy seller no matter how great the price is. Good luck!
