  I've been picking out an outfit too. From what I've read, the advice seems to be:
  
     - match in formality and color tones but avoid matching outfits
     - wear something in which you are comfortable
     - some structure to clothing tends to be more flattering than say a jersey material
     - go for a good fit: too loose will look bigger and too fitted will show bulges even the super-attentive and self-conscious may not have predicted
  
  We're going with two outfits: one jeans/nice top casual and one a bit dressier but still not formal. My FI likes button ups, but one outfit will be jeans and the other khaki/slacks. I figure if one outfit for either of us doesn't photograph great, then hopefully the other will.
  
  One last thought that has been helping me to stress less (from someone who rarely likes pictures of herself and really wants a picture we both like): the photographer will take a bunch of shots. We just need one or two good ones for our Save the Date and to help inform our wedding pictures.

  My photographer gave me a really good tip on how to pick out coordinating outfits:

  Imagine all of the clothes are going on one person. It really helps to bring the colors together and choose outfits that compliment each other.

  Also avoid: patterns, black, white, shirts with words.

  Don't wear exact matching outfits.

  
  

  We had 3 different outfits:

  1) I wore a long purple dress w/ black accessories, him with a tan shirt and black slacks and shoes

  2) I wore a green top and shoes with dark brown skirt, him khakis and light brown shirt

  3) Sports jerseys < I know that kind of broke the "matching outfits" rule, but it turned out for great shots.
